Friday will soon be upon us. Are you ready for the Battle of the Bridge game?
The traditional game of Burlington-Edison High vs. Mount Vernon High has been held at least once a year since 1911. This will be the 104th contest, according to the Skagit Valley Herald sports gurus.
This is one of the longest running rivalries in the state, so it’s no surprise that both towns are buzzing with anticipation. The University of Washington marching band will add to that hype. They are performing the pregame show and halftime show. The UW Husky band is bringing 290 band members and cheerleaders to the game, and their appearance is being paid for by the B-E band booster club and the football booster club.
The B-E Tigers’ band will continue to play songs in between plays, said band director Richard Dahl, including the fight song.
Just in case you haven’t already memorized the words to the fight songs for either school, here are the lyrics and a video to help you learn the tunes. (Special thanks to Kevin Gudgel's ASB students at Burlington-Edison and Jacob Scherr's band students at Mount Vernon for their assistance with the video.)
Burlington-Edison’s fight song
Go B-E Tigers fight for B-E fame
Show the guys from Mount Vernon High
Just how to play our game
Rah, rah, rah!
We’ll be behind you cheering all the way
So rip up the floor and pick up the score
And win for us a victory
Go, Tigers, Go!
Fight, Tigers, Fight!
Let’s go, let’s fight,
Let’s win for us this game tonight.
Mount Vernon’s fight song
On, Mount Vernon! On, Mount Vernon!
Fight until the end!
Run the ball around the goal post,
Touchdown sure this time!
Rah, rah, rah!
On, Mount Vernon! On, Mount Vernon!
Fight until the end!
Fight, fellas!
Fight, fight, fight!
We’ll win this ga-ame!
Burlington-Edison leads the series, 55-39-9, and the Tigers have won the past five games. Before that, Mount Vernon won eight straight. Last year’s score was Burlington-Edison 10, Mount Vernon 3.
As for who will win the game, few wanted to guess. People from both schools said they think this will be an evenly matched contest, and possibly one that could be remembered for a number of years.
Tickets are not likely to sell out, according to B-E Athletic Director Jim Clem. In addition to about 3,000 seats in both visitor and home stands, there is standing room around the track oval.
When: Gates open at 5:15 p.m. Friday. Seating is first come, first served. Game starts at 7 p.m.
Where: Kirkby Field at Burlington-Edison High School.
Parking: At the high school or the vacant Thrifty Foods lot at the intersection of Burlington Boulevard and Fairhaven Avenue.
Tickets: Get them the day of the game or at each high school’s athletics office through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for students with an ASB card, and $2 for fans age 62 and over.
Before the game, the B-EHS wrestling team will hold a tailgate salmon barbecue beginning at 4:30 p.m. The meal includes salmon, a spud and a soda or water for $8.
What memories can you share of games between the two schools? Who do you think will win this time and why?
