Here’s a quick look at the football playoff scenarios for local teams.
Class 4A: Stanwood is still alive here, but the Spartans’ road to a state berth may be as hard as it gets. The Spartans need a win against Arlington next week to secure their division’s third playoff berth, but then it will mean tackling either Skyline or Bothell, the top two 4A teams in the state, on the road to earn a state berth. The Spartans have an outside shot at the second playoff berth, but would need a win and two Lake Stevens losses to have a shot.
Class 3A: Both Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley are alive here. The Bulldogs are in better shape, as they have yet to play Ferndale. The winner of Friday’s game between Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley will have the inside track on one of their conference’s two Class 3A playoff berths. The team that grabs the No. 2 seed will have to play an extra game with the Western Conference 3A’s No. 3 seed, probably Everett or Shorecrest, for the right to play the South Puget Sound League’s No. 1 team, which right now is top-ranked Lakes.
Class 2A: Burlington-Edison can lock up the No. 2 seed out of the Northwest Conference with a win Friday against Mount Baker, then can move up to No. 1 by beating Lynden the following week. Either way, the Tigers would get a home crossover game against a Cascade Conference school to earn a playoff berth.
Class 2B: Concrete is in good position for a playoff berth. Because Life Christian is still winless this year and won’t reach its mandatory level of six wins for playoff consideration, the Northwest 2B League’s No. 2 squad automatically moves into the state tournament. The Lions can take a big step toward wrapping up a spot by beating Orcas Island on Saturday. Should the Lions lose, that berth will likely come down to the Week 10 contest with Darrington

This is the Cubs’ year to make a great run - Cubs have beat back in the past 12 months a near-miss with a dump ending in March of this year, a 1 day semi-teacher’s strike plus the death of a football coach. I think this bunch will bust through all expectations! |

B-E may not be a lock for #2 in NWC 2A after all. If in Week 9 Blaine beats Bellingham, Squalicum beats Mt. Baker, and Lynden beats B-E, there becomes a 3-way tie for second. Word up north is there’s already been a coin flip and if this scenario plays out, Blaine gets the #2 spot by having won this coin flip. |
