Skagit County officials have now posted the updated Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps online.
This is the beginning of a months-long process for community members to examine the maps, comment on them and possibly appeal the findings. Community leaders are discussing when and where to hold meetings for public comment. There is a 90-day comment period followed by a 90-day appeals period. The maps could be approved in early 2011.
The maps show the flood risk for properties along the Skagit River during a 100-year flood event, which has a 1 percent chance of happening each year. This series of maps includes communities east of Sedro-Woolley and along the Samish River basin. The above photo shows the flood risk for the towns of Birdsview, Hamilton and Lyman. In the black shaded area, the Skagit River expands its banks to pour water through all three communities. The yellow area becomes flooded as a result.
Skagit County was not the first to place the documents online. The website, Skagit River History, beat the county by a few hours. Look for documents dated June 30 (beware, most documents are very large). The website owner, Larry Kunzler, has also posted public hearing transcripts dated as far back as 1924 about area flood mitigation efforts.
To see how prior floods have impacted the Skagit Valley, you can view an extensive photo gallery of flood events as far back as the late 1800’s.
The last time the FEMA maps were updated was 25 years ago. It would be interesting to see if the issue was as contentious then as it seems to be now. The maps are used by insurance companies to determine flood risk.

WoW.. what of the folks on the Eastside, upriver.. where flooding occured every couple years. I remember in the 80’s Eastside flooded nearly every year. Watching animals and parts or whole buildings and other homestead items floating down the Skagit river.. Well, controlling Nature is a mistake.. always seems to have nearly irreversible consequences. Living in a Delta?… without pontoons and life vests, and escape option? Probably NOT another good idea, again!
