Keeping warm outside (and in)
5 Comments | Email | Print | 697 views by Carissa Wright on October 30, 2009

It's cold in the Skagit Publishing office building. Very cold. I have considered digging up my fingerless gloves and wearing them at my computer station. I can't find them in my house — otherwise I would have them on right now. Layers are my friend, I've found, and because I work mostly nights I can get away with a sweater, hoodie sweatshirt and an old, surprisingly warm jacket I used to wear at soccer practice. But during the day when I should look somewhat professional, I have to get a little more creative with my layering.

Enter next week's crafty project: A little scarf.

I love crafty projects. My coffee table is a thrift-store find I painted with a chalkboard finish — everyday art. It's fun. And I have a couple of small baskets filled with half-finished knitting projects (all scarves — I'm not very good). But crafting supplies can get pricey. Enter sites like Dollar Store Crafts and Thrifty Decor Chick. These sites are great for crafting on the cheap.

The plan: A scarf lying around at home and a few thrift-store buttons will become a neck warmer to keep in my desk at work. Two problems — my freezing office and a morning's boredom — solved for the price of a few buttons.

Share your crafty projects below, or e-mail me at .

I have walked into many office buildings where people complain its cold ...others not only feet away complain its hot, but yet its the same tempature! Id suggest a portable 110v heater under your desk ... works well for spot heating

I’m guessing “very cold” means that if you sit still for long enough, like most desk jockeys do, you begin to lose feeling in your hands and feet and nose and any other extremity.

Narf, you’re exactly correct. I was able to dig up my fingerless gloves from winters in Idaho, though, so they help when it gets really chilly in here. And it’s not so much the temperature as the constantly circulating air - my desk is right under a bunch of fans that seem to be on 24/7!
