Cole Sager said in a profile story last week that he would go to University of Washington football games as a boy and hope one day to play for them.
Today that dream has come true in one of college football's most well-known and cherished stadiums. Sager played on special teams in the Huskies' 37-30 overtime thriller of a loss to Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
Seattle Times reporter Bob Condotta makes note of Sager's appearance here in his game chat. It's in the second item from the bottom, noting that head coach Steve Sarkisian wanted to see better blocking on special teams.
Sager ran for 1,086 yards in his prep career and scored 19 touchdowns. He helped the Tigers reach the Class 2A state finals in 2007 and the semifinals in 2008. While he drew some interest from smaller schools, he decided to take a shot at walking on at the University of Washington, where he was the only running back on the team not on scholarship.
"The support I've been getting from people back there (the Skagit Valley), the phone calls, seeing people down here, has really meant the world to me," Sager said in the profile story written by Eric Francis.
Now Sager has played in Notre Dame Stadium, home to the famous Touchdown Jesus mural and more than 80,000 fans.

So cool! I heard that he was making the trip and would be on special teams, so I was looking for him on the kick returns. Once I spotted #20 with the letters S A G E R on the back, I paused the picture and asked my sons, “Do you know who this is?” They read the jersey and said “no way! Is that Cole Sager?” To which I replied, “Yep, he did walk on tryouts and made it. His dream, determination, and hard work is paying off; and there he is!” Way to go Cole! Keep making us proud! |
