MV Schools seek district director

The Mount Vernon School Board is accepting applications until Oct. 5 for a replacement District 5 director. Applicants must live within the Mount Vernon School District 5. The vacancy is available due to the recent resignation of board president Charlie Guildner. Information about the district boundaries and the application procedures is available at the district administrative office, 124 E. Lawrence St., Mount Vernon, or by calling 360-428-6181.

What role should students' standardized test scores have in influencing school funding?

Under No Child Left Behind, the new standardized assessment test, called the Smarter Balanced assessment, is the measure by which schools are essentially graded. Lower test scores can lead to “failing” schools, which causes districts to lose control of some of their federal funding, among other consequences.
