The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Sept. 13 plans to provide grant money to 18 states — including Washington — to help schools meet new federal meal requirements.

Under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, school meals must now include certain amounts of various colors of vegetables, lower sodium levels and whole grains, among other changes. These are the first significant changes to school meal requirements in 15 years.
