WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama was elected the nation’s first black president Tuesday night in a historic triumph that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself.
The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his victory by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Iowa.
McCain called to concede defeat.

I just hope America chose right.
This is a great day as an American, not so good as a Republican. BIG difference.
G*d bless America.

In his speech tonight he said we are all gonna have to sacrifice.
I think we are gonna find out the hard way how liberal a guy this is.

I heard someone describe Obama’s “spread the wealth” plan like this:
A lady went into a nice, trendy diner that caters to a more upscale, liberal clientele. Outside the diner stood what appeared to be a homeless man who had clearly not had a bath or a change of clothes in weeks, if not months. The homeless man was holding a sign that said “please help give $$”. The lady went past the homeless man on her way into the cafe, dropping a couple of coins in the rusty old can he held in his other hand.
After looking over the pricey menu, the lady ordered a $25 lunch plus a bottle of pricey mineral water and a dessert to-go. With tax, the bill total came to just under $35. Because the lady had been busy reading the Wall Street Journal throughout the meal, she had not taken much notice to her waiter - a young, smiling college student. When he brought the bill, the lady commented to him about the “Obama 2008” political button he wore. Smiling and practically giddy, the waiter said to the lady, “Oh, yes! I am voting for Senator Obama - he’s the change we need for this country. I support him 100%! He’s going to turn this economy around and finally people like me will have a chance at getting a piece of the pie - isn’t it exciting?!”. The businesswoman asked him, “what do you think about his recent comment “spread the wealth around, so everyone benefits?” He smiled and said that he thought it was a wonderful idea, and that everyone should end up benefiting from such a plan and that he hoped to see those without to finally get what they deserved. She just nodded her head, smiled faintly and pulled out her credit card and gave it to the waiter.
When the young, hopeful waiter returned with her credit card and receipts to keep and sign, the lady signed her credit receipt but left the tip area blank. The waiter looked at her, puzzled, thinking she must have made a mistake. When the lady noticed his puzzlement, she said to him, “Because you’re so supportive of Obama and believe in his plan to spread the wealth around so much, I just thought I would give you a head start. See that homeless man standing outside hoping for donations from a passerby? Well, I’ve decided to give your $7.50 tip to him in an effort to ‘spread the wealth’. I think he deserves it more than you, don’t you agree?”

I’ll second that ALL THE WAY. I’m still just as worried as I was before the election. I don’t feel more secure (financially, etc.)....I don’t know that I would have felt anymore secure if McCain was in office instead....it’s scary times, period.
I think it’s a great day for America because so many people turned out to vote so their voice would be heard...I just worry that they elected a rock star with a very scary personal agenda (as Livin Up River said).

I’m a center right leaning voter that although my candidate(s) didn’t necessarily win am proud of America for continuing our democratic process of electing our public officials. Unlike some that were disappointed in 2004, I will not be moving to another country. I’m hopeful that Obama is everthing he promised and hec..if that’s true then as a Middle Class American I should look forward to economic bliss and more HANDOUTS from Big Brother as that is what was promised. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

And even though I was disappointed, I’m going to make every effort to be positive. Unlike others in 2004, I’m not going to be stomping around like an indignant 2 y.o. saying “He’s not MY President” or slap a “Don’t blame me I didn’t vote for HIM” bumper sticker on my car.
What I PRAY for is a true coming-together of this country. The people spoke, and we need to accept the outcome and move FORWARD....doing what’s best for ALL of us.

I am right there with you, Manerva. Even if I didn’t wish for this outcome, it IS what the people have chosen, and I respect that. Having a negative attitude towards it isn’t going to make it any better for any of us!

I don’t make much money but I understand that we can’t have huge tax cuts during a time of war and a recession. I will do my part in sreading what little wealth I have if it means better school’s, road’s, more police, firemen and women, and helping someone that needs it more than me.

Best way to improve schools is to open them to competition, so bad teachers can’t hide behind the skirts of the teachers Union anymore.

We’ll I think that the united states needs a change and if Obama can deliver a change that can benefit all of us then we might see it soon enough. I for one voted for Obama because I think that he can turn this country around. I don’t know about anybody else but I think that this nations is becoming unfair in some aspects. Me, as a 20 year old hispanic mother just hope that I have made the right decisions for my children so that they live throught a less difficult time in the future. To say the truth Yes I voted for him but there is still a doubt that makes me think if I made the right decision but I will find out soon enough right?.
When the election campaignes were going on you couls hear some flaws or questionable action in both McCains plans and Obama’s but anyways God Bless America and let’s hope that the future hold a better government for all of us.

Although I did not Vote for Obama I will support him as President of the United States as he was elected by my fellow citizens. I can only hope that those who so strongly supported him put forth as much effort holding him to the promises he made. In particular Health Care for every american by allowing them to buy into the same insurance offered to federal employee’s and no tax increases for 95% of households.

I wondered if I made the right decision also Luzy...but in all honesty...I truly considered voting for Obama. I too think we need change and that this country needs to be turned around....but he lost me when he said he didn’t agree with anything Reverend “God D&MN;America” Wright said...he sat in his church for TWENTY YEARS listening to those sermons. Wright MARRIED he and his wife, baptized his children....he followed that preacher of hate. I just couldn’t stomach that hypocrisy and in my heart, I couldn’t give him my vote. Am I right? Maybe not...but my fellow citizens made their choice and now he’s our leader. I too pray he turns this country around for ALL our children’s sake....I say God Bless US ALL...we NEED it. :)

Yeah I agree with you and I am not going to debate that whole obama reverend scenario because you may be right but I know that not everybody is perfect. Even our PRESIDENT. I also know that there are a lot of people that do what Obama did and it looks really, really bad on him because he is a public figure.
There were also mistakes that Palin and McCain made and one of them is not agreeing with each other. I watched them give interviews and how I saw it just confused me more because it seemed they were debating against each other. Even though I am doubtful now I can’t take my vote back and all I can do is have faith and wait for the best and for the deliverence of the promises that Obama made to the American people.

I think everybody needs to at least give Obama a chance. He’s barely out of the starting gate as the president elect, and it will definately be interesting to see what happens when his administration takes the reigns of the white house. Look on the bright side, at least we finally after 8 years have a president who is even remotely willing to talk about the needs of the American people, before wanting to blow the krap out of something. If anything I think America sent the world a message on Tuesday night, that regardless of what Obama can or cannot accomplish during his term as our nation’s president, that America is ready for a change in not only our leadership, but a change in how we are viewed by the rest of the world. Give Obama time, I hope he can deliver in all of the ways he’s promised, go Obama!

I have every intention of giving Obama a chance to show what he could do. Regardless of who I voted for it would be stupid to wish him ill will as that would mean ill will for our nation. I just wish that same consideration would have been given President Bush 8 years ago. I still chuckle each time I recall a conversation with a gentleman in March 2000, which was a mere 2 months after Bush took office. He was blasting President Bush for problems inherited from Clinton. Again I hope the best for Obama as he IS MY President even if I didn’t vote for him. But it still puzzles me why there weren’t “changes” made in our Democrat led House & Senate that are just as much to blame for our economic situation. God Bless America and may Obama be the hope he is touted to be, but I and 57,000,000 other voters will be watching closely.
