Staff at Western Washington University’s Shannon Point Marine Center assisted colleagues last week at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories in recovery of bones from a juvenile fin whale placed on the ocean floor at a site off of San Juan Island.

Members of the marine center’s scientific dive team were assisting in a research program aimed at documenting the natural decomposition cycle of whale carcasses and the pattern of use of the resulting skeletons by other marine creatures.
