Drivers can be cited for using hand-held devices only if they have already been stopped by police for another reason. Still, that could result in a $124 ticket, at the officer’s discretion. (A related reminder: It is already illegal to text-message while driving in this state.)

I don’t own a cell phone and have no intentions of ever buying one, but I think this one-size-fits-all law is ridiculous.  If people can’t safely drive and talk on the phone then they can’t safely drive and change stations on the radio; so why not make radios and stereos in cars illegal?  What about these people with their fluffy little dogs in their laps while wheeling down the road.  Let’s pass a law!!  And conversations with passengers in the car?  Much too dangerous!  How about a law where the driver has to wear a gag if there are other people in the car?  What about the cops talking on their cop radios while driving?  Sounds like an accident looking for someplace to happen.  Make them pull to the shoulder to use the radio.

It’s my contention that people who can’t drive in a safe manner while talking on the telephone couldn’t drive worth a damn to begin with.
