Anacortes is on track to allow accessory dwellings in residential neighborhoods, remove a 50,000-square-foot cap on retail construction near Fidalgo Bay and permit housing over retail in commercial zones.

Those are among numerous large and small changes to Anacortes’ development regulations and zoning code moved forward Monday by the Anacortes City Council as part of a 2008 zoning update process.

“It won’t be binding, but it will go for state notice,” said City Planning Director Ian Munce.

The council will discuss Old Town design standards and regulations on Aug. 11 to decide whether to add any of those proposals to the draft update before submitting it. An interim cell tower ordinance will also be included
