After a record-shattering fundraising effort in 2007, the United Way of Skagit County has set another ambitious goal for its 2008 campaign.

At the organization’s annual kick-off breakfast Friday in Mount Vernon, campaign chair Terry Belcoe said the United Way will seek to raise $965,000 this year to support local agencies that provide a variety of community “safety net” services. Last year the United Way raised $937,551 in donations from companies, organizations and individuals. More than 30 local service agencies get support from the United Way fund.

The organization is already more than 40 percent of the way toward its 2008 goal. “Pacesetter” companies, public entities and other organizations have combined to pledge about $414,700 toward the 2008 goal.

Belcoe is president and chief executive officer of North Coast Credit Union. United Way of Skagit County President for 2008 is Greg Reed, chief executive of United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley.
