Our school districts are faced with mounting financial challenges as we brace for what is likely to be an extended period of economic uncertainty. Frugality will no doubt be a dominant theme in school board discussions going forward. But whatever financial pressures there are ahead, we cannot afford to shortchange our children in the classroom.

Burlington Edison District sure needs to pass some kind of bond for construction just to update and facilitate safety projects in the district. Voters, you need to give them your support now. Thinking the building boom was going to go on forever, the district has followed the wishes of developers and architects on their facilities committiee for too long, and put pie in the sky wish lists up on the ballots that voters could not support and let health and saftey issues at out existing schools deteriorate. Bad Policy. The hign school is a mess and could have most likely been upgraded already had the bonds in the past not included so much expansion for development. Not so long ago the facilities committee wanted to tear down West View School with no plan to replace it leaving us with one less school in the city. We need to support growth in the city where it belongs, not out in the county. I think West View has been neglected for years just so they could justify tearing it down. In the past bond funds available to do work on a cafeteria and gym were never spent. Now the district is commited to upgrading the school and that’s a good thing. The district needs our support now. As for the $5.5 millon they will ask for property aquisitions, unfortunately the properties have aready been purchased and will need to be funded somehow. It’s risky to put it on the ballot now. We can’t afford to delay other immediate needs. And even if voters approve the bond it is no garranttee it could actually be funded now in this credit eviroment. That is a tough question.
