It is incredible the number of people with ties to PSE who write in to condemn the Skagit County PUD. Equally sad is the fact these people either neglect to mention that the fluoridation proposition was merely an advisory ballot or they leave out that bit of information intentionally. Perhaps they slept through Civics class and do not know how it differs from a binding vote. In reality, an advisory ballot is a joke. Had the vote gone the other way, Munks and Dahlstedt would have noted that it wasn’t binding and would have passed Resolution #20070284 anyway.
To this day, no one has provided a satisfactory explanation as to why so many non-PUD voters received ballots on Proposition 2 and PUD customers were left out. It is clear that the result of the vote was meaningless.
From his intensity, I don’t buy Jerry Jewett’s claim that he has “no views pro or con on fluoride.” Again, the “wish of the voters” was advisory only and was essentially split right down the middle. This continued cry that there was any mandate for fluoridated water is an indication that a certain segment of the population doesn’t understand the workings of a Constitutional Republic. The United States is not a democracy, where anything goes provided that a simple majority approves.
The Constitution gives individuals specific unalienable rights that protect against a tyranny of the majority. With the volume of misinformation contained in Mr. Jewett’s letter, it can be dismissed safely.
