Forum Help

Selecting Email Preferences

When you first register for the forum, you provide an email address, which is used to activate your forum account. After that, you determine exactly how your email address is used (or not used) by using the Email Settings form. The form enables you to do any of the following:

  • Change your forum email address.
  • Control whether the forum administrator can send you email from a special administrator's email form.
  • Control whether members can email you from the forum software.
  • Ask the system to automatically subscribe to all the topics in which you post a message. (The system then sends you an email notification when someone replies to those topics).
  • Enable Smart Notification for all the topics to which you have subscribed.
  • Ask the system to send you an email notification when someone sends you a private message.
All these features are enabled when you first register. You can deselect and reselect them by following the instructions below:
  1. At the top of any page, click the 'Profile' link.
  2. Under Personal Settings, click Email Settings. The Email Settings form is displayed.
  3. Depending on your preferences, select or deselect any of the check boxes.
  4. To change your email address, enter the new one that you want to use from this point forward in the Email Address text box at the top of the form. Then, enter your password in the Your Existing Password text box at the bottom of the form.
  5. Click the Update button.
Tips:
  • Only members can email or send private messages from the forum.
  • When members email you from the forum, they cannot see your email address; however, you can see their email address in the message that you receive from them.
  • If you deselect the option for accepting email from others, your EMAIL button is hidden in your public profile and the member list.
  • If you disable private messaging, the Notify me via email when someone sends me a private message check box remains in your Email Settings form; but if you select it, it has no effect.
  • If you don't want to subscribe to all the topics in which you post a message, you can still subscribe to any of them individually.

Sending Email Messages

You can send other members email messages directly from the Member List or from their public profiles.

Notes:
  • Every message sent through the forum is logged and the forum administrator can view all of the following from the Administrator's Control Panel.
    • The Subject line.
    • The screen name of the sender and the recipient.
    • The date and time that the message was sent.
    • The IP address (numeric web address) of the sender.
    • The email address of the recepient.
  • That is all the administrators can see; they cannot see what you type in the body of the message. The purpose of this is to prevent, monitor, and address abuse and to uphold our terms of service and privacy policies.
  • You cannot see a member's email address when you email him directly from the forum; however, upon receiving your message, the member can see your email address.
  • No one is permitted to use the forum email messaging system to advertise. Abusive or offensive messages will not be tolerated.
To send an email message to a member, do the following:
  1. Do one of the following:
    • Locate the member in the Member List.
    • Navigate to the member's public profile.
  2. Click the member's EMAIL button. The Email Console form is displayed in a popup window.
  3. In the Email Subject text box, enter the subject.
  4. In the Email Message text box, enter your message.
  5. If you want to email yourself a copy of the message, select the "Send me a copy of this email message" check box.
  6. Click the Submit button. A "successfully sent" message is displayed.
  7. Click the Close Window link or use the standard close button at the top of the window.

Receiving Email Messages

When you first register, your account is set up so that other members can email you directly from the forum. You can deselect this feature in your email preferences. If you do, your EMAIL button in the Member List and in your public profile is hidden.

There is no email Inbox in the forum. Although others can email you directly from the Email Console window in the forum software, you receive their messages in your regular webmail or email software Inbox.

When you receive these messages, you can see the members' email addresses; but they cannot see your email address unless you send them a reply message. If a sender selects the "Send me a copy of this email message" check box in the Email Console window, the system emails him or her a copy of the message, but only his or her email address is revealed.

All the messages you receive from other members are logged, and the administrator can view the following:

  • The Subject line.
  • The screen name of the sender and the recipient.
  • The date and time that the message was sent.
  • The IP address (numeric web address) of the sender.
  • The email address of the recepient.
That is all the administrator can see; she cannot see what you type in the body of the message. The purpose of this is to prevent, monitor, and address abuse and to uphold our terms of service and privacy policies.

No one is permitted to use the forum email messaging system to advertise. Abusive or offensive messages will not be tolerated. If another member sends you a business advertisement or an abusive or offensive message, please contact the administrator and report it.

Subscribing to Topics

When you create or visit a topic in the forum, you can click the Subscribe to this thread link in the upper-right corner of the topic's title bar to subscribe that topic. When you subscribe, the system sends you an email message when someone posts a reply in it. A link is included in the email message; when you click it, your browser opens and the page where the reply is posted is displayed.

Tips:
  • When you first register for membership, a default preference is selected in your email settings that automatically subscribes to every topic in which you post a message. You can deselect that option.
  • When you create a topic, you can subscribe to it by selecting a check box in the Post a New Topic form.
  • Another default option is Smart Notification. This feature ensures that the system only notifies you once that a reply has been posted. After you log in and visit the topic, you will receive one notification email message again, when the next member posts a reply in it.
  • You can view your subscriptions in your Control Panel.
  • There are two ways to unsubscribe from a topic; the easiest is to simply click the Un-subscribe from this thread link in the same area.

Viewing Subscriptions & Unsubscribing from Topics

You can view all your topic subscriptions and unsubscribe from any of them individually. To view your topic subscriptions and/or unsubscribe from a topic, do the following:

  1. At the top of any page, click the 'Profile' link.
  2. Under Utilities, click View Subscriptions. The Subscription Manager form is displayed. All the topics to which you have subscribed are listed.
  3. To visit any of the topics listed, click on the corresponding link in the Title column. The topic page is displayed in a separate browser window.
  4. To unsubscribe from a topic, select the corresponding check box in the Unsubscribe column, then click the Unsubscribe button.
Tips:
  • You can also unsubscribe by visiting the topic and clicking the Un-subscribe from this thread link in the upper-right corner of the topic's title bar.
  • When you first register for membership, a default preference is selected in your email settings that automatically subscribes to every topic in which you post messages. You can deselect that option if you post often and don't want that much email.
