Parking at the trailhead is limited. If the lot is full, park in the gravel lot across from the Eaglemont clubhouse and walk to the trailhead.
There is a picnic shelter at the trailhead and the gravel path directly behind it leads to a couple of benches.
This hike begins with .33 miles of trail through a forest bordering a large pond and extensive wetlands. Surrounded by high-end homes, the wildness of the forested portion takes one back to a time when ponds and old-growth timber dominated the landscape as opposed to fairways, water hazards and sprawling decks hanging off luxury homes.
The vast majority of this trek, however, takes place in an urban setting, trading trees and ferns for manicured lawns and sport courts.
Distance: 2 miles
Destination: Loop trail
Difficulty: Easy
Elevation gain: Minimal
Getting there: From South Waugh Road in Mount Vernon, continue past the Eaglemont Golf Course clubhouse. Turn left on Eaglemont Drive. Continue down the hill and turn left on Beaver Pond Drive. Go about .6 of a mile to the trailhead on the left.
The Trek: After parking, proceed left on a paved path that becomes a gravel trail along a water retention pond.
It’s a short distance before reaching three green posts marking the Eaglemont Trailhead. Proceed between the posts and immediately downhill to a bridge that spans a stream. If the bridge deck is wet, it’s going to be slick. Watch your footing.
Once across, head uphill and enter a lush forest nestled below towering homes.
Large cedar trees dominate the area while ferns and fungi carpet the understory.
Massive stumps dot the landscape. Springboard notches visible in many of the stumps are signs that loggers years ago cut the trees down to size.
Continuing on, trek across another bridge spanning runoff that is making its way toward the pond. There is an abundance of water running off the steep hillside above as there is not much to hold the water when rainstorms pass through. Pass a massive stump on the right as the trail continues to meander along.
The large pond can now be seen through the trees.
Cross another footbridge. The trail bends to the right and begins to descend. A trail to the right leads to the pond’s shoreline. This is the only access point along the way and allows a nice view of a decent-size body of backwater with plenty of decaying logs and vegetation both on its shoreline and under the surface of the water. Numerous waterfowl frolic and frogs croak loudly as the skies briefly clear.
The trail opens up as the canopy thins. The path then climbs steeply.
Pass a manicured lawn at the first of several switchbacks. The trail now hugs the hillside as it continues to climb. At another small stream, the path switchbacks to the left.
Climbing out of the green gully, pop out onto a cul-de-sac as the trail goes from wild and rustic to urban.
Going from gravel to asphalt, you now walk along New Woods Place. Pick up the sidewalk and continue to Alpine View Drive. Go left at Alpine View Drive and follow it a ways before turning right on Landmark Drive. At South Waugh, turn left and continue south past the golf course clubhouse. Retrace the route you had driven to return to the rig.
