Much of the trail is made up of sand.

This is a great outing for the entire family. The park is nestled on the shores of the South Fork of the Stillaguamish River and boasts a boat launch and fishing access along a mile-long stretch. There are picnic shelters complete with tables, barbecue pits, campsites and plenty of wide open spaces. The park is about 150 acres.

Yurts can rented at the park. The six canvas domes sleep four to eight people and are located on the bench above the meadow.

While the area is a public park, it’s also a working farm. The meadows are harvested for hay.

There are any number of trails that may be taken. Together, there are about six miles worth. The trails through the Upland Woods include many plants native to the Northwest.

During the park’s development in 1977, artifacts were found indicating American Indians traded and lived in the area. The Stillaguamish lived from this area north to Jim Creek in three longhouses, hunting and fishing along the south fork of the Stillaguamish River and Jim Creek.

The Tveit and Hovde families homesteaded the site. Parts of the land was used as a dairy farm.

Traces of an early farmhouse, along with surviving ornamental plants such as flowering quincee, kerria, rose, daffodils and old apple trees, still exist on “Homestead Terrace” above the main sections of the park.

Watch for black-tailed deer, bald eagles and garter snakes.

Distance: 2.2 miles

Destination: Loop Trail

Difficulty: Easy

Elevation gain: None

Getting there: I-5 south to Exit 208 (Arlington State Route 530). Take Highway 530 a half-mile past the bridge that spans the South Fork of the Stillaguamish River. Take a right on Arlington Heights Road. After one mile, turn right on Jordan Road. Drive two miles to the River Meadows Park entrance, which is on the right.

The Trek: Park in the small grass lot across from the Grand Meadow and walk south down the gravel road you just pulled in on. Continue toward the campsites.

The large meadow to the left is Funnel Meadow.

The path skirts the western flanks of the massive meadow as it borders the South Fork of the Stillaguamish River.

There isn’t much deviation in the trail’s direction. Only a slight bend here and a turn there as it continues south. The route is about as flat as they come.

About a quarter-mile down the path, Funnel Meadow becomes Terrace Meadow. The trail bends around the southern end of Terrace Meadow.

There are paths that continue on. However, these are basically used by fishermen and most lead to the water’s edge.

The trail makes a large arc as it reaches the park’s boundary. Skirt the boundary and continue north on a single-wide trail.

To the right is Upland Woods. Various species of trees vie for access to sunlight as the canopy is thick.

Reach an intersection. The trail to the right is a short spur trail that leads into the Upland Woods.

Go to the right and enter the forest. It’s a short distance before yet another trail is reached. Proceed to the right. The trail backtracks toward the park’s boundary before turning east and once again doubling back.

The Upland Woods Trail is shady and cool. Trees creak and groan as breezes blow through their branches.

Watch for deer making their way through the understory. Reach a slight incline as you press on. The incline soon levels out.

Reach a gravel road and continue on.

At the next intersection, there is a decision to be made.

One can continue down the gravel road and eventually come out just across from the Yurt Village. If this is your chosen route, simply continue down the road and return to the rig.

If you wish to prolong your stay on the trail, venture down the gravel road and locate a trail to the left.

This trail doubles back to the south before reaching another intersection. Proceed to the right, then right again to reconnect with the trail bordering Funnel Meadow’s east side, and return to the rig.
