A Mount Vernon police officer walks through the scene of a shooting Tuesday night on South 6th Street in Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON — A 28-year-old man was shot in the torso during a fight on a residential street Tuesday night, police said.

Just before 8:30 p.m., a caller reported gunshots in the 1200 block of South 6th Street near Section Street, according to the Mount Vernon police.

There had been a fight in the area, and at least one man was armed with a rifle, said police Lt. Chris Cammock.

Witnesses at the scene said they heard multiple gunshots that sounded like they came from two different guns, then cars driving away.

Police have not confirmed how many weapons were involved.

The injured man was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital for surgery, but no more was known about his injury, Cammock said.
