LAKE CAVANAUGH — A teenager and a young man from Everett were flown to Seattle for treatment Sunday afternoon after they were injured in a head-on crash between two dirt bikes in the off-road vehicle area of Walker Valley.
Andrew Nakao, a 23-year-old man involved in the crash, was in satisfactory condition Monday night at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, a nursing supervisor said. The condition of the second injured person, a 15-year-old boy, wasn’t available Monday night.
The crash occurred about 3 1/2 miles from Lake Cavanaugh Road on state land on a logging-style road designated by the Department of Natural Resources as B-1000, said State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary. The accident was reported about 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
The teenager was riding a dirt bike downhill on the road, traveling about 25 mph, Leary said.
Meanwhile, Nakao was riding his own bike uphill at about 60 mph, and he cut across a blind corner, Leary said. The speed limit in the state-managed off-road-vehicle area is 25 mph, he said.
The dirt bikes struck head on in the roadway, and the teen hit his head, Leary said. His parents were following him downhill a short distance behind but were not involved in the crash, Leary said.
The teen broke both arms and suffered a head injury, and Nakao broke his right femur and a wrist, Leary said. Troopers cited Nakao for negligent driving.
