Steve Van Luven, the only Republican in a five-way primary election race for state Senate in the 40th Legislative District, took a commanding lead in early returns from Skagit, Whatcom and San Juan counties.
Kevin Ranker was leading fellow Democrat Ken Henderson in their fight to determine which of them will face Van Luven in November.
Van Luven’s totals for both counties was at 7,489 in the first returns released by the county elections offices. Ranker led Henderson by 5,467 to 3,508. The two were within about 100 votes in Skagit and Whatcom counties' totals, but Ranker was leading Henderson by a substantial margin in San Juan County, where he serves on the county council.
Elections officials said there are thousands of votes yet to be counted.
