The Port Townsend Arts Commission and Northwind Arts Alliance are seeking entries for the tenth annual Art Port Townsend Juried Art Competition “Expressions Northwest.” Works in two- and three-dimensional forms, including photography, will be accepted. Open Mic in the Mezzanine

The Skagit Valley Food Co-op, 202 S. First St., Mount Vernon, will offer an acoustic “open mic” in the deli mezzanine at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 30, with sign-up starting at 6 p.m. Bring songs, poems and free form pieces to perform. 10 minute sets. The Whatcom Museum Syre Education Center, 201 Prospect St., Bellingham, will present “Owl Art & Owl Science” from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, June 30, through Wednesday, July 2. Artist and Teacher Kelly Sobanski will teach a drawing workshop for ages 7 to 12 with the Museum’s collection of owls for inspiration. Students will use drawing kits — which they will be able to keep — to create drawings in black and white, pastel, colored pencil and crayon. Students will also have the opportunity to create owl sculptures. $60, $50 for Museum members. Registration has begun for the Roeder Home Children’s Summer Art Classes. A variety of classes for ages 3-12 are offered during three two-week sessions from June 23 through July 31. Small class size — 8 to 12 per class — provides a supportive environment for kids to experience numerous art media. Some classes allow exploration of different mediums in the same class — drawing, clay and collage or watercolor, beaded jewelry and polymer clay. Other classes focus on one medium — drawing, clay, or pastels. Subject matter includes science, nature, pioneer life, mystical creatures or international art. Cooking classes have been expanded this summer with one week, two-session classes for ages 4-7 and 8-13.

Classes in the park include “Barnyard Art and Animals” at Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale, “Nature workshop” at Lake Samish Park and “Mosaic Magic” at Semiahmoo Park. The Barn Theatre is accepting registration for its 2008 Summer Festival of Plays. The drama workshops will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 7-16, followed by five performances July 17-20. Open to ages 5-18. For information, call 360-756-9916 or 360-671-5970.

Cooperative gallery seeks art

The Jazzinators, a community jazz ensemble open to all instruments and ability levels, will begin rehearsals at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, in Arlington. Photographs needed for calendar

The Skagit Watershed Council is accepting submissions of natural landscape photographs of the Skagit River and its tributaries for its 2009 calendar until July 31. For information, call 360-419-9326.



Auditions



Skagit Opera will hold auditions for experienced adult chorus singers for Verdi’s “La Traviata” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 415 S. 15th St., Mount Vernon. The Barn Theatre will hold auditions for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical “Oklahoma” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday, August 24 and 25, at the theatre, Sudden Valley, gate 2, dance barn, Bellingham.
