Anacortes High School students have already collected more than 10,000 books to help kids in Uganda.

And they’re not done yet.

Members of the Schools for Schools club will host the second annual Resolution Bash, a benefit concert to raise money to help kids in Africa, beginning at 7 tonight at the Department of Safety, 1011 12th St.

The event features music by Deluxe Goodness, Mystery House, Say Never, Emily Leopold, Panda Dysfunction and John Van Deusen until midnight. A dance follows until 3 a.m.

Cost is $7 per person, but bring extra money for food, hats, T-shirts, DVDs and more. All of the money raised goes to Schools for Schools, an organization dedicated to helping children in Uganda receive an education.

“The unique thing about our club is that all of our events are conceived of, planned and executed exclusively by our club members,” said Hannah Smythe, president of the AHS Schools for Schools club. “Instead of relying on adults to help us, us kids have learned how to advertise, get people involved, get donations, etc., all by ourselves.”

The club hosted book drives at Mount Erie, Island View and Fidalgo elementary schools Oct. 20-Nov. 21. Book drives at Whitney Early Childhood Education Center, Anacortes Middle School and AHS continue through Jan. 9.

At last count, Smythe said they have 10,604 books with thousands more waiting to be counted when school starts again in January.

The club has also received donated books from the Anacortes Public Library and other places around town.

“The book drive is a national competition and the top three schools that raise the most books will have the opportunity to send a club representative to Uganda in the summer,” Smythe said. “Currently Anacortes High School is in contention for this honor.”

Schools for Schools, based in California, is focusing its efforts on rebuilding the schools in Uganda in order to give the children hope for the future. Last year, kids across America raised more than $3 million for the cause and this year Schools for Schools is not only raising money but collecting books as well.

The organization was started after three teenage boys from California traveled to Uganda in 2003 in search of adventure. What they found was a story that both disgusted and inspired them. Throughout their journey, they witnessed incredible horror and suffering, especially among the children.

To chronicle their adventures, they made a movie called “Invisible Children: Rough Cut.”

For more than 20 years, a rebel leader Joseph Kony has terrorized Northern Uganda with his army of child soldiers.

Because of the war, more than 1.2 million people living in Northern Uganda have been forced to leave their homes and take up residence in displacement camps.
