Joel Grossman and Katie Warner have earned academic honors while playing soccer at Western Washington.
Grossman, an Anacortes graduate, and Warner, a Burlington-Edison graduate, have made the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic All-Star team.
Grossman had a 3.82 grade-point average in business administration and Warner a 3.20 gpa in Spanish. The seniors have also done well on the field.
Grossman, a midfielder, has started all 16 of the Vikings’ matches. He has two assists.
Warner, a defender, has started 13 of her team’s 14 matches. She has one assist.
Curry concludes career
Matt Curry has wrapped up his college soccer career.
The Mount Vernon graduate scored a goal in his final game Oct. 28 for Evergreen State College. Evergreen lost to Northwest College 2-1.
Curry, a senior forward, had five goals and seven assists this season while playing as a midfielder and forward. He started all of his team’s games.
King 15th in conference meet
Kyle King placed 15th on Nov. 1 at the Big Sky Conference cross country championships.
King, an Eastern Washington freshman, is a Coupeville graduate who competed at Oak Harbor.
He had a time of 24 minutes, 34.1 seconds on the 8,000-meter course in Portland.
King will run Nov. 15 at the NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif.
Welling eighth in regional
Jordan Welling helped the Western Washington men’s cross country team to a berth in the national finals.
Welling, a Burlington-Edison grad, is a college sophomore for the Vikings.
He finished eighth Saturday at the NCAA Division II Western Regional, finishing the 10,000-meter University of California-San Diego course in 33 minutes, 19.2 seconds.
Welling and his fellow competitors had a long day.
Midway through, the race was stopped because the rider on the bicycle leading the runners took a wrong turn.
The runners had to run the entire race over after the women’s race.
The nationals are Nov. 22 in Slippery Rock, Pa.
Three other area runners competed in the regional.
Burlington-Edison grads Wes Hargrove (72nd) and Scott Power (83rd) competed for the Central Washington men’s team, while Sedro-Woolley grad Marcie Mullen (17th) competed for the Central Washington women’s team.
Howell finds a new home
Britt Howell will be pitching for a new college this spring.
The former Concrete softball standout transferred this summer from East Carolina to Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C.
She went 5-3 in 54 1/3 innings on the mound in her one season at East Carolina.
