The list of athletes expected to convene on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Randy’s Pier 61 compares favorably with the more contemporary Anacortes alumni listed elsewhere in these pages.
It’s the entire roster of the 1956-57 Anacortes High School football team. The team went undefeated, running off nine wins in a row, while outscoring the opposition 203-6.
They are: Tom Higgins, Dave Balthazor, Orville Breckenridge, Jack Higgins, Virg Taylor, Ed Way, Joe Roberts, Lynn Taylor, Fred Knapp, Loren Orsini, Fred Symonds, Dick Bargewell, Bob Johnson, Bill Frederick, Gary Keister, Keith Lauderbach, Bill Asseln, Ken Stone, Bob Hartson and Bill Peterson.
They’ll be joined by others. Perhaps the basketball team members who finished second in the state with a 26-1 record. And everyone’s partners. And, hopefully, Anacortes alums who knew and admired this team and the men who composed it.
The stated purpose of the gathering is to honor coaches Bill Peterson, Al Cornett and Art Larson.
The gathering is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and disband at 5 p.m.
