Grammy award-winning contemporary jazz guitarist Bill Frisell will perform with Doug Wamble on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Anacortes Jazz Festival. Frisell is one of the hottest guitarists on the scene today.

A Grammy-winning jazz guitarist, Dizzy Gillespie’s velvet-voiced daughter, a standout male vocalist, a charismatic B-3 organ wizard and much more are on tap at the 2008 Anacortes Jazz Festival on Labor Day weekend.

The festival, put on by the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce, offers world-class performers and a chance to enjoy fine wine, locally brewed beer‚ delicious seafood and an extraordinary view of the San Juan Islands.

Starting the festival is a dinner and concert featuring Kevin Mahogany at 6 p.m. Friday‚ Aug. 29 at the Port Warehouse. At the gala, Mahogany will demonstrate his talents as a jazz interpreter and improviser. At the main stage show Saturday on Curtis Wharf he will explore Kansas City blues.

Saturday’s schedule also boasts a significant late addition — Bill Frisell, the 2005 Grammy winner for best contemporary jazz album. Appearing with Frisell is renowned jazz and blues guitarist Doug Wamble. Other Saturday performers are hometown jazz diva Trish Hatley, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and Dillinger’s Clambake.

Sunday’s main stage show features Jeanie Bryson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Clarence Acox, Pocket Change and Gadjo Gypsies.

Bryson, the daughter of Dizzy Gillespie, has a soulful, sultry, pensive and playful voice reminiscent of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. Smith’s performance on the B3 organ was the sensation of last year’s festival.

Monday’s lineup features Kellylee Evans, Pearl Django, the Tiptons and Mike Allen Trio.

Nominated for Juno and Gemini awards in 2007, Evans has a calming voice that has been compared to Sade, Erykah Badu, Sarah Vaughn and Norah Jones. The Tiptons are a dynamic all-female sax quartet with a percussionist. Perennial favorite Pearl Django offers toe-tapping gypsy jazz.

Other notable events are a free community swing dance with Pony Boy All–Star Mini Big Band at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Port Warehouse and a joint cover Jazz Walk Friday through Sunday at downtown pubs and restaurants.

Gala dinner tickets are $50. Tickets are $30 per day for the Festival on the Wharf on Saturday and Sunday, $25 for Monday or $75 for all three days. Music starts at 11:30 a.m. each day.

The Full Brass Package, $125, includes tickets to all three days of concerts on the wharf and the gala dinner and concert.

Tickets are available through TicketWeb.com, at the Chamber of Commerce office, 819 Commercial Ave., and at the gate, Second Street and O Avenue. Call 293-7911 or visit http://www.anacortes.org.
