Coffee machine cause of home fire
An unattended espresso machine ignited a fire that caused about $2,000 worth of damage to the kitchen of a R Avenue home the evening of April 6, said Fire Chief Richard Curtis.
Curtis said it’s not clear how the coffee machine started the fire. He has since e-mailed the manufacturer to see if it is aware of any issues related to the machine. The damaged home’s occupant, who was outside at the time, put the fire out with an extinguisher about 7:15 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, the fire was mostly out, Curtis said.
He said that the fire caused about $1,000 in structural damage to the single-story home and about $1,000 worth of property was lost.
Firefighters also responded to a vehicle fire Saturday in the 5600 block of Heart Lake Road. A 1994 Ford pickup had smoke coming from under its hood when firefighters arrived, Curtis said.
The owner reported hearing an explosion and seeing flames under the hood. He sprayed water from a garden house under the engine compartment and largely extinguished the fire.
NAS Whidbey sailor missing
Anacortes police are helping in the search for a missing sailor stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island who was last seen Thursday evening.
Petty Officer 3rd Class James J. Kim, 25, drove to Seattle to pick up a friend at the airport and stopped at a bar with friends on the way to kill time, said Anacortes Capt. John Small. Kim left the bar and never arrived at the airport.
The Washington State Patrol found his car parked along Interstate 5 near Highway 518 with three flat tires.
“(The tow truck driver said) based on the damage to the car it looks like he ran into something that caused the tires to flatten,” Small said.
He said theft is not a likely motive because the car’s GPS system was not taken. Kim, who lives in Skyline and is part of VAQ 133, was supposed to be back at work April 10.
Small said officers have tried calling his cell phone, which goes directly to voicemail. Anacortes police are working with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
Heart Lake gets deep cleaning
Anacortes Diving & Supply and the Anacortes Dive Club Scuba will be diving at Heart Lake in support of Earth Day on Saturday.
Each year the divers work with the Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department to choose a local lake for scuba divers to clean up.
“The divers like to help out by picking up the trash most can’t see,” said Bob Scarzafava of Anacortes Diving. “The phrase out of sight, out of mind does not apply to the divers.”
The divers will start their cleanup at 9 a.m.
