Fire fighters union in contract negotiations

The Anacortes Fire Department’s firefighters union is in the midst of contract negotiations with the city.

The union and city met for the fifth time Friday. Negotiations started in June.

Anacortes Fire Chief Richard Curtis said the goal is to have a contract before the end of the year, when the current contract expires.


Anacortes woman injured in collision

A 56-year-old Anacortes woman was injured after another car hit hers head-on just after 9 p.m. Friday in West Mount Vernon.

Suzanne Rohner was transported to Skagit Valley Hospital with a broken ankle and cuts, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

A 17-year-old Mount Vernon man was driving westbound on Memorial Highway near Dunbar Road when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a vehicle driven by a 62-year-old Seattle man, according to the report. The 17-year-old’s vehicle continued in the eastbound lane and struck Rohner’s vehicle head-on. The 17-year-old was also injured and transported to Skagit Valley Hospital. The Seattle driver was not injured.


School District hosts educational screenings

The Anacortes School District will conduct free educational screenings for preschool children (birth to 5 years old) on Monday, Aug. 25. Parents and preschool providers interested in having kids screened should call the Whitney Early Childhood Learning office at 293-9536 to register.

The school offers the screening to help locate, identify and evaluate children with a suspected learning disability, regardless of the severity of the disability.

The district offers free educational screenings for students birth through 21 years old residing in the district.
