An 18-year-old man faces a charge of being in physical control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol after an officer found him slumped inside his car at a stop sign around 5:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4.
An officer saw the vehicle sitting at the stop sign at 22nd Street and J Avenue with its engine running and its lights on but with nobody visible inside.
The officer found the driver slumped over on his side inside the car. The officer tapped on the window but the driver did not respond until the officer opened the door and tapped on him. The driver smelled strongly of alcohol and showed other symptoms of intoxication.
He allegedly admitted he had “a couple of beers.”
The driver said he remembered stopping at the stop sign, but nothing after that. He provided two breath samples that were over the legal limit and was cited and released to a sober friend.

Friday, Aug. 1
• An Oak Harbor woman reported another car struck hers as she was driving up the road to Mount Erie around 10:45 a.m. She said the other car was coming down the mountain at a high speed. The female driver of the other car stopped, said the accident was her fault and allegedly urged the Oak Harbor woman not to call the police. She then left the scene with a notebook belonging to the victim after failing to identify herself.
The suspect’s vehicle was later found at a house in the 2000 block of N Avenue and had damage consistent with striking the other car. The vehicle was impounded after no one would come out to speak to the officer. The investigation continues.
• A Guemes Island resident reported someone cut the gas line to her car while it was parked near the Guemes ferry terminal. Estimated damage is $100.
• An Anacortes resident reported the theft of two small wooden toy boats valued at $15 from a campsite at Washington Park.
• An Anacortes man reported while he was out sailing someone stole a $150 camera and memory stick from his unlocked car parked near a marina in the 1000 block of Q Avenue.
Saturday, Aug. 2
• A resident of the 2000 block of K Avenue reported the theft of four homemade shrimp pots that were stacked at the back of his house. Total value is $280.
• A 4-year-old girl was bitten by a German shepherd while staying at her grandparent’s house in the 4300 block of A Avenue. The girl was sleeping in the same room with the dog. She was bitten on the face and her father was bitten on the arm when he came to the girl’s aid. The girl was treated at the emergency room. The animal control officer is investigating.
Sunday, Aug. 3
• A 25-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct after being belligerent at a restaurant in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue just after midnight. The man, who was riding a bicycle, was refused service at the drive-through window because he was intoxicated. The man became irate and started yelling obscenities at the staff and other customers. The man ignored officers’ commands and tried to pedal away before being taken off his bike and arrested. The man was cited and released after he admitted his actions were “stupid.”
• An Anacortes woman sitting in her car narrowly missed being struck by a driver who pulled in next to her and hit her car door around 10:30 a.m. The woman reported she parked in a store parking lot in the 1700 block of Commercial Avenue and had her driver’s side door open as she prepared to get out.
She said a vehicle driven by an unknown man pulled into the space next to her and collided with the open door and narrowly missed her leg. The woman said the man provided an insurance policy number, but left without giving his name or any other information. The investigation continues.
• All-day arguing between a 27-year-old Anacortes man and his 24-year-old girlfriend at their residence culminated with the woman reporting the man pulled her hair and pushed her. The woman admitted hitting the man, but witnesses confirmed the man was the primary aggressor. The man was stopped driving his car a short time later and booked into jail on a charge of domestic assault.
• An Anacortes man reported the theft of a backpack, which contained numerous prescription medications, from inside his car parked in a store parking lot in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue. There was no evidence of forced entry.
Monday, Aug. 4
• An Anacortes resident reported the theft of her purse from an unlocked vehicle in the 800 block of H Avenue. The purse contained the victim’s wallet, checkbook and cash.
• A church in the 1000 block of 12th Street had crude graffiti drawn on the concrete handicap ramp of the building with a blue pen. Church members were able to clean off the markings.
• A customer of a restaurant in the 500 block of Commercial Avenue reportedly intentionally broke a glass on top of the bar. Two employees were struck with broken glass but not injured. The restaurant management requested the customer be told he is no longer welcome at the business.
• A 36-year-old man was arrested on a charge of domestic violence malicious mischief after officers responded to a report of a physical domestic assault around 8:45 p.m. Officers spoke with a 42-year-old woman who said her boyfriend got upset after she told him she wanted to end their relationship. The woman said the man was intoxicated and he threw items around in their bedroom and smashed a telephone. Officers saw the damage and found the man as he was trying to leave the garage. He was arrested and booked into jail.
• A 49-year-old woman was arrested on a charge of domestic assault after neighbors reported a fight inside a house around 10 p.m. The woman was reportedly intoxicated and allegedly hit her mother and 11-year-old son with a rolled up sweatshirt, bent the boy’s fingers back, twisted the boy’s T-shirt around his neck and pushed his head down over the kitchen sink. The woman also allegedly pushed the boy’s head against a cupboard. The woman was booked into jail on two counts of assault.
• A resident in the 1300 block of 18th Street reported someone smashed an egg on the trunk of her car causing minor damage to the paint.
• An Anacortes man reported someone stole a toolbox containing assorted hand tools from the back of his pickup sometime in the past four months.
Tuesday, Aug. 5
• Four 15-year-old Anacortes boys are suspected of writing graffiti and smashing beer bottles near the gazebo at Rotary Park. A wallet found at the scene contained one boy’s identification. An officer contacted the boy and his mother at his residence. He smelled of alcohol and admitted he had been drinking at the park. The boy gave officers the names of the other boys. The investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are pending.
• A business in the 1400 block of Commercial Avenue reported receiving a check from a customer written on a closed account. The 50-year-old Anacortes woman is being investigated and has been previously charged for writing numerous other checks on the closed account. Additional charges are pending.
• The foreman for a construction project in the 1100 block of 22nd Street reported vandals broke conduit pipes, broke off survey markers, tore down safety signs and left mounds of empty beer cans at the site. Extra patrol of the site was requested.
Wednesday, Aug. 6
• A 29-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on charges of DUI and reckless driving after his pickup crashed into a power pole in the 2200 block of H Avenue and he reportedly drove away around 5:30 a.m. The man was contacted sitting next to his heavily damaged vehicle in the 1900 block of 24th Street after officers followed a trail of fluid leaking from the pickup.
Officers noted the man smelled heavily of intoxicants and admitted he had “a lot” to drink. He was taken to the emergency room for treatment of facial cuts sustained in the accident. The man performed poorly on field sobriety tests and he refused to consent to a blood draw. He was also cited for driving without a valid license and having no insurance.
• A resident in the 3700 block of W. Fifth Street reported someone entered her home and stole two laptop computers, a digital camera, an iPod and a credit card. Total value is about $2,000. There was no sign of forced entry.
Thursday, Aug. 7
• A resident in the 2300 block of 32nd Street returned home to find his back sliding glass door open. The man was sure he left the door secured when he left his house, but there was no sign of forced entry. Nothing appeared to be missing.
• A 19-year-old Arlington woman reported she was propositioned to have sex for money by a 59-year-old Anacortes man. The woman reported she and her girlfriend were paid by the man for modeling services. The woman said she later returned to the man’s residence to view the photos and he offered her money to have sex with him. The investigation continues.
• An Anacortes man reported someone accessed his truck through an unsecured window while the vehicle was parked at Storvik Park and stole his wallet and some prescription medication. The man’s wallet contained his identification and about $450 in cash.
