An Anacortes police officer scaled down a large cliff to rescue a 16-year-old Anacortes boy who fell off the rock cliff on the Cap Sante viewpoint and became stranded on a rock shelf at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.

Anacortes police officer Chad Pruiett attached himself to a rope and shimmied down the cliff. He secured the rope to the teen and they were able to climb back to the top. The teen was uninjured.

Friday, July 25

• A 22-year-old Oak Harbor man was arrested outside a store in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue around 4:30 p.m. after employees saw him and a woman leave the store without paying for groceries worth about $500. Employees watched the couple push a grocery cart filled with unbagged items to a vehicle in the parking lot. The man’s 20-year-old girlfriend, who left the scene, later came to the police department where she was arrested on charges of theft.

A search of the woman’s purse produced a camera that was reported stolen in Oak Harbor in May. The man said he bought the camera, but admitted he knew it had been stolen when he bought it. The pair are charged with theft and trafficking in stolen property.

• A 57-year-old Burlington man was arrested for attempting to steal about $300 in groceries from a store in the 900 block of 11th Street around 7:45 p.m. Employees followed the man as he pushed a shopping cart full of groceries out to the parking lot. Officers found the man also had four warrants for his arrest out of Mount Vernon and Skagit County courts. The man was cited for theft and booked into jail on the warrants.

Saturday, July 26

• A resident of the 900 block of Fifth Street reported someone keyed her car overnight while it was parked downtown behind a restaurant. Estimated damage is $1,500.

• A woman reported the theft of her purse from an unlocked car in her unlocked garage in the 1900 block of Ninth Street. Nothing else inside the garage appeared to be missing.

• Officers responded to a fight behind a bar in the 400 block of Commercial Avenue just before 1 a.m. A large group of people were behind the bar, including a 34-year-old Anacortes man who was intoxicated and had a bloody lip and head. He refused medical treatment and was verbally abusive to witnesses.

Witnesses said the man called a woman a derogatory name and then exchanged name calling with a male friend of the woman. The man reportedly ripped his own shirt off and attempted to run up behind the male friend, who had turned to walk away. A third man punched the shirtless man when he saw his friend was about to get punched from behind. The friends had left the area when officers arrived. The shirtless man continued to yell obscenities at officers and passersby and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

• After a possible DUI was reported in the parking lot of a restaurant in the 1300 block of Commercial Avenue just before 5 a.m., an officer arrived and saw a man and woman walking towards an unoccupied vehicle. When they saw the officer approaching they ran. The officer followed the man and caught up with him behind a business in the 1400 block of Commercial Avenue. The man, an 18-year-old from Anacortes, said he ran because he knew he had a warrant and did not want to go to jail. The man, who smelled of intoxicants and displayed other effects of drinking alcohol, faces charges of underage drinking and resisting arrest.

• A man reported his 14-year-old stepson assaulted him and the boy’s mother the previous night. The mother allegedly confronted the boy about having cigarettes and alcohol and the boy got upset and pushed and hit his mother. When the stepfather tried to intervene, he said the boy knocked him to the floor and began hitting him. The man had visible bruising around his eye and scratches to his nose. The man said the boy later shoved him into a wall causing the man to injure his wrist. The boy was referred to juvenile court on domestic assault charges.

Sunday, July 27

• A 21-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on a charge of DUI after an officer stopped his vehicle in the 2000 block of O Avenue for improper lane travel and speeding at around 2:45 a.m. The driver smelled strongly of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet, but he denied having anything to drink. The man’s license was suspended for a previous DUI. He was placed under arrest and later provided two breath samples that were nearly twice the legal limit.

• A woman reported the theft of about $75 in foreign currency from the bedroom of her residence in the 2100 block of Commercial Avenue. The victim provided a possible suspect name and the matter is under investigation.

• A man reported a hit and run to his vehicle while it was parked in a vacant lot in the 1900 block of Cay Way. The man found his vehicle’s rear quarter panel dented and the taillight assembly broken. Estimated damage is $1,000.

Monday, July 28

• A resident of the 1900 block of Bay Place reported the theft of his vehicle registration and proof of insurance from inside his car. The man said the car was a convertible and he made several stops around town with the top down in the previous two days.

• A 49-year-old Centralia woman was arrested for shoplifting a box of blood glucose test strips and a cleansing bar from a pharmacy in the 1400 block of Commercial Avenue. A customer saw the woman conceal the items in her purse. The woman was cited and released for theft and trespassed from the business.

• A woman reported a burglary to her house in the 1200 block of 37th Street around 4:30 p.m. The woman said she was gone for a few hours and returned to find her mailbox was smashed.

Inside she found a glass candle broken, bookshelves knocked over, kitchen shelves ransacked with food strewn about the floor, the bathroom medicine cabinet contents scattered around the floor and the master bedroom ransacked with closets pulled from the wall.

An exterior door was kicked in and the door frame damaged. Numerous plants and trees in the backyard had been uprooted and thrown on the patio. The woman said an upset family member may be responsible. The investigation continues.

• A resident in the 1900 block of Lea Place reported someone broke the globes of eight solar lights from her yard overnight. The globes were found shattered on a nearby tennis court. Estimated damage is $50.

Tuesday, July 29

• An Anacortes man reported he was punched in the face by a 43-year-old Anacortes man and had a chipped tooth and a possible broken nose. The victim said he was living at a house in the 800 block of Fifth Street and the other man also lived on the property. The victim reported he called the other man’s girlfriend a derogatory name and the other man took offense and punched him in the face. The suspect was later arrested and faces a charge of assault. The suspect had an injury to his finger that he said happened when he punched the victim.

• A 16-year-old Anacortes boy was arrested on a charge of being a minor in possession after an officer stopped a pickup on Sunset Avenue with three juveniles riding in the open bed. The juveniles tried to duck and hide as they passed by the officer. The teen in the back of the vehicle allowed the officer to look inside his backpack. The officer found several bottles of beer in the backpack and the teen allegedly admitted he stole them from his father.

• A 17-year-old Anacortes girl was booked into juvenile detention after grabbing a baseball bat and allegedly threatening to strike her grandmother with it. The girl also admitted hitting her grandmother with a thrown sandal. The two had been arguing about the girl’s future living arrangements. She faces a charge of domestic assault.

• Officers responded to a motel in the 1100 block of Sixth Street to remove a 42-year-old La Conner man who was refusing to leave around 1:45 a.m. The man tried to rent a room but did not have money or identification. After giving false identification, the man gave the officer permission to check his backpack for his ID. A marijuana smoking pipe was found in the backpack along with identification. It was learned he had two warrants for his arrest. The man was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and obstructing a public officer and booked into jail on the warrants.

Wednesday, July 30

• A member of a church in the 2700 block of J Avenue reported the glass to an exterior door was smashed and the door frame slightly bent. It was unknown who or what damaged the glass. Estimated damage is $750.

• A resident in the 3300 block of West Third Street reported finding a teenage boy sitting on her back steps with his pants down massaging his genitals around 7 p.m. Officers checked the area for the boy and spoke with several neighbors who said his description matches someone who frequents the neighborhood. The investigation continues.

Thursday, July 31

• Graffiti was found on the exterior walls of two businesses in the area of 12th Street and O Avenue. The graffiti appeared to have been drawn with a blue broad-tipped marker overnight.

• The Anacortes Parks Department reported someone started a fire in the trash cans inside of the rest rooms near the Tommy Thompson Trail at 21st Street and R Avenue. The fires burned themselves out but caused minor damage to a wall and smoke damage to the building.

• Officers responded to the area of 22nd Street and Commercial Avenue to check on a teenage boy reportedly vomiting near the corner at around 6:30 p.m. A 14-year-old Anacortes boy was contacted and examined by paramedics. In his pocket was an energy drink can that had been fashioned into a smoking device and contained residue that smelled of burnt marijuana.

The boy claimed he was carrying the can for his friends and denied smoking anything. The boy was released to his father. He will be referred to juvenile court on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
