A 24-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on a charge of DUI after weaving in the roadway and almost striking the curb several times near the middle school when children were present around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 9.

A convenience store clerk had reported an intoxicated man was staggering and refused to leave the store. He drove away from the business in a pickup before offices arrived.

An officer spotted the pickup on M Avenue. The vehicle reportedly ran a stop sign at 22nd Street before the officer caught up and stopped it. The driver allegedly handed the officer a credit card instead of his license. He smelled strongly of intoxicants and had to lean on his pickup to stay on his feet.

When asked to do field sobriety tests, he would not respond to the officer and just stared. The man appeared to be extremely intoxicated. He was taken to the police station where he refused to take a breath test. He was booked into jail.

Among the other 240 cases handled by Anacortes police during the previous week:

The officer spoke with the man away from his two teenage sons, who were passengers in the car, and he admitted he “punched it” and had no idea how fast he was going. The man’s driver’s license was suspended for unpaid tickets and his driving record showed numerous speeding violations. He faces reckless driving and suspended license citations.

The woman claimed her best friend, a 27-year-old woman who lives at the apartment complex, got involved in the argument and attacked her. The woman had fresh scratches on her arms she said were the result of the attack, but she did not want to pursue charges. The woman and her baby were taken to another friend’s home to cool off.

Later, the woman and her 23-year-old boyfriend were contacted outside the police station after they argued about the man not wanting the woman to drive away with their child.
