What was described as a pit bull mix dog may be deemed potentially dangerous after it aggressively approached a mail carrier, who was injured backing away from it in the 600 block of I Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 27.

The dog was loose in the yard and when it confronted the carrier on his rounds. The man fell into a ditch and suffered scrapes and back pain. A witness was able to distract the dog, which allowed the man time to get away.

The animal control officer arrived and found the dog loose in the neighborhood. It was impounded and the owner later cited for having her dog at large. The same dog also went after the mail carrier on a previous occasion.

Friday, May 22

• Red painted graffiti was found on the brick of an exterior wall on the east side of the library.

• A witness reported hearing a car alarm and then seeing two people drive away from the port dock in a white truck just after 9 p.m. The truck struck a parked vehicle as it drove off. Officers stopped it in the 2800 block of Commercial Avenue and identified the driver as a 24-year-old Anacortes woman and a passenger as a 26-year-old Mount Vernon man.

The woman smelled of intoxicants and allegedly admitted she was drunk, that she took the truck for a drive without permission and that she struck the other vehicle. The truck’s owner was contacted and confirmed no one had permission to take it.

The passenger showed signs of alcohol consumption, although he was under Department of Corrections supervision and prohibited from drinking. Both were arrested and booked into jail for investigation of motor vehicle theft. The woman was processed for DUI and reportedly provided breath samples above the legal limit. She also faces charges of hit and run and driving with a suspended license.

• Officers responded to a call about a car in a ditch on Oakes Avenue near Eagle View Court just before 11:30 p.m. The driver, a 38-year-old Anacortes man, had a bloody nose and said he hit his face on the steering wheel. He said another car crossed into his lane and he steered toward the ditch to avoid a collision. His vehicle traveled more than 100 feet in the ditch before going up and over a driveway and knocking over a street sign.

The man smelled of intoxicants and allegedly told the officer he probably had too much to drink. He was transported to the hospital. He gave two blood samples and faces possible DUI charges pending analysis of his blood.

• A 23-year-old Anacortes man was arrested near Highway 20 and Christianson Road on an outstanding Island County warrant for a previous traffic offense. The man was turned over to an Oak Harbor police officer.

• A woman reported the theft of her vehicle registration form and insurance documents from her pickup. The woman was unsure when the theft occurred, but was concerned about possible fraud.

• A 24-foot ski boat had its fuel line cut and about 45 gallons of gasoline drained from its tank. A $100 battery was also stolen from the boat. The boat was parked in a garage secured with a contractor’s lock box at a house under construction in the 2100 block of 20th Street. There was no sign of forced entry into the garage.

Saturday, May 23

• An officer watched two teenage Anacortes girls steal a watermelon from an exterior store display in the 900 block of 11th Street just after 2 a.m. The officer contacted the two teens who smelled of intoxicants. They allegedly admitted they had not paid for the watermelon. One girl removed a pineapple from under her shirt that she had also stolen, and she also had a large can of beer there. The girls allegedly admitted stealing the fruit and drinking a few beers. They were referred to Juvenile Court on charges of theft and underage drinking.

• A Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputy saw four teenage Anacortes boys sneaking around a vacant house in the 2600 block of West Third Street just after 3 a.m. The deputy heard a smash and then saw an exterior light go out. The boys were detained for investigation of burglary by the deputy and Anacortes officers. Several window screens on the house were cut and removed but the boys did not get in. The teens, all age 16 to 18, allegedly admitted they wanted to get into the house to hang out. They face charges of attempted burglary.

• A 48-year-old Burlington woman was cited for disorderly conduct after offending tenants at an Anacortes marina by showering in the men’s bathroom with her husband.

• Someone threw a football-sized chunk of concrete through a double-paned window on the press box at Daniels Field at Volunteer Park. It was thrown with enough force to break through both panes of glass and put a hole in the drywall at the back of the press box. Estimated damage is $500.

• A resident of the 1200 block of 34th Street reported two juvenile boys shot his garage door with a pellet gun while he was standing in his driveway. Two 15-year-old boys were contacted at a neighboring house and allegedly admitted firing the air rifle.

They apologized to the homeowner and no criminal charges were sought. City ordinance bars the discharge of air guns within the city limits.

• A medical office in the 1200 block of 29th Street had its windows pelted with eggs overnight. 

• An unoccupied Honda Civic sustained a damaged hood grill after being struck by an unknown vehicle in the Whistle Lake parking lot. It appeared a larger vehicle, possibly a pickup, backed into the Honda.

• A 24-year-old Mount Vernon man was arrested on charges of DUI after an officer stopped his car in the 1100 block of O Avenue for speeding in the downtown area. The man smelled of alcohol, allegedly admitted drinking and failed field sobriety tests. He was cited and released to a sober friend.

Sunday, May 24

• A purse containing a cell phone, wallet, identification, credit cards, checkbook and about $200 in cash was stolen from a car parked in the 3600 block of West Third Street. The car’s windows were left slightly down, which allowed the thief to reach inside and unlock the door.

• Rocks were thrown through two gold tinted glass windows at a church in the 1200 block of M Avenue overnight. 

• A 23-year-old Lynwood man was cited for drinking alcohol at Whistle Lake after a Parks Department employee saw him with several cans of beer. The man said he did not see the posted signs with park rules prohibiting drinking. His beer was dumped out at the scene.

• An officer smelled burnt marijuana coming from a car that was stopped in the 900 block of 13th Street for having a defective brake light around 11:30 a.m. The driver, a 22-year-old Lynnwood woman, said she did not have marijuana in the car, but allegedly admitted having a pipe in the car that she used a few hours earlier. The officer found the pipe and the woman was cited and released on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

• A $200 silver iPod was stolen from an unlocked car in a driveway in the 3600 block of West Sixth Street. The center console and glove box had also been rifled.

Monday, May 25

• An officer on foot patrol in the 1900 block of 13th Street around 12:30 a.m. overheard three teenage boys getting into a car saying they were too hammered to drive and that they should take the back roads. The officer approached the car as it pulled away from the curb and recognized the driver as a 17-year-old Anacortes boy. The driver and one of the passengers appeared to be intoxicated. Portable breath samples confirmed they had been drinking.

The driver was arrested on a charge of DUI and one of the passengers on underage drinking. The second passenger did not display any signs of drinking and was released. The driver provided breath samples more than three times the legal limit. He was also cited for driving with a suspended license.

• A resident of the 1300 block of Eighth Street reported she thought her neighbor put an unknown substance on her lawn to injure her cat. She diluted her lawn with water, but wanted the incident documented.

• An exterior window was broken and a laptop computer belonging to the school district was stolen from a classroom at an elementary school in the 1300 block of 41st Street. The teacher was working with the police to determine if any other items were stolen.

• A $300 32-inch flat panel television was stolen from a detached garage in the 800 block of 31st Street. The side door to the garage was left open.

Tuesday, May 26

• A suspicious man dressed in a wedding gown was reportedly running in and out of traffic on Commercial Avenue around 12:45 a.m. A 27-year-old Anacortes man was contacted and he said his friends dared him to don the wedding dress and stand in traffic. He was told not use the road to “walk down the aisle.”

• A 33-year-old man pushing a shopping cart full of soda and dessert items on O Avenue at 2 a.m. was contacted by an officer to determine if he had the store’s permission to remove the shopping cart from the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue. The man claimed he purchased the items, but the officer noticed the items were in plastic bags from a grocery store in Burlington. The man allegedly admitted he stole the items and took the cart without permission from a display in front of the Anacortes store. He was arrested on a theft charge.

• A specialized $450 single speed bicycle was reported stolen from the bike rack at the front of Anacortes Middle School.

• Three unlocked vehicles were prowled at a residence in the 1400 block of Lea Place. Each of the vehicles was rifled and the owner was missing a 40-channel CB radio and a Bluetooth charger.

• A 15-year-old boy reported he gave his iPod to a 20-year-old man after the man allegedly threatened to harm him. The investigation continues.

• The owner of a business in the 1700 block of Commercial Avenue reported he recently terminated an employee for stealing money from the business. The employee also allegedly admitted to the owner he stole money from the business on two occasions. The employer wanted to pursue theft charges. The investigation continues.

• A thief stole a full seven-gallon gas can from the back of a pickup parked in a driveway in the 6100 block of Parkside Drive. A tie down strap in the pickup bed was also cut.

Wednesday, May 27

• Police found a glass panel to the front door of the police station smashed around 6:45 a.m. Police reviewed security camera video and identified the suspect as a 64-year-old Anacortes man who was shown kicking the door. Malicious mischief charges are pending. Estimated damage is $500.

• Two 14-year-old boys were referred to Juvenile Court on charges of possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds after one boy brought a dagger to school and sold it to the other boy.

• A boat owner found someone entered his boat moored at a marina in the 1000 block of Q Avenue through an unlocked hatch and had possibly been living on the boat. The owner found bottles of liquor, women’s clothing and jewelry, and a multi-tool on the boat that did not belong to him.

• A plum tree in front of the Depot Arts Center was pushed over and damaged apparently as the result of being struck by a car that jumped the curb.

• A $500 21-speed bicycle was reported stolen from a driveway in the 1100 block of 11th Street. The bike was reportedly locked.

Thursday, May 28

• An 11-year-old boy allegedly admitted lighting a small piece of paper on fire and then dropping it into a toilet at an elementary school in the 2600 block of J Avenue. The incident will be handled by school officials.

• A 30-year-old registered sex offender is being investigated for failing to notify officials he moved from his home on Devonshire Drive. The man reportedly moved out about three weeks ago to an unknown address out of the area. He was required to notify law enforcement within 72 hours of moving and provide his new address.

• Officers found four people who got lost after dark while walking the trails near Little Cranberry Lake around 10 p.m. Officers were able to get an approximate location for the hikers based on their cell phone’s GPS.

• A 27-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested on an outstanding warrant for a previous theft charge out of Burlington. She was booked into the county jail.

• A 28-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested at a home after allegedly assaulting her boyfriend. The couple had been drinking at a downtown bar and the woman reportedly became upset when her boyfriend wanted to leave. The man had a bloody wound on his neck he said was from the woman punching him on their drive home. She was booked into jail on a charge of domestic assault.

• A $50 fixed blade knife and about $30 in change was reported stolen from a home in the 1200 block of 29th Street. It appeared the suspect pried open the front door to get in.

• A 10-speed bicycle and an 18-pack of beer were stolen from an attached garage at a house in the 900 block of 29th Street. It appeared the door was pried open.
