A 28-year-old Anacortes man faces a charge of DUI after a BMW crashed into a barricade on airport property in the 4000 block of Airport Way just after 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14.
Witnesses said the car was traveling at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a curve. A witness said the male driver pulled off his shirt as he ran from the scene with a petite female.
The vacant car smelled of intoxicants. Officers checked the area and found a man and woman walking on Oakes Avenue who matched the witness’ descriptions.
The man initially claimed someone beat him up and stole the car, then allegedly admitted he wrecked it. He showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody. His driving status was suspended for unpaid tickets.
His 20-year-old girlfriend, owner of the wrecked car, also appeared intoxicated and was taken into custody. She identified her boyfriend as the driver.
The man provided two breath samples above the legal limit. He was booked into jail on charges of DUI, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and hit and run. The woman was cited and released on a charge of underage drinking.

Friday, Nov. 14
• An officer stopped a car on Padilla Heights Road near Reservation Road for a traffic violation and found the two male occupants were illegal immigrants from Mexico. At the request of the Border Patrol, both men were detained until an agent arrived and took custody of the men.
• A resident of the 1400 block of 13th Street reported someone punctured two tires on his Ford Escort with a sharp instrument.
• Officers were told a 15-year-old Anacortes boy who had an outstanding warrant was across the street from the high school. The boy was taken into custody and booked into juvenile detention.
Saturday, Nov. 15
• An officer stopped a car with expired license tabs at 17th Street and K Avenue around 12:30 a.m. and recognized one passenger in the car as a 21-year-old Anacortes man sought on two arrest warrants and a second passenger in the car as a 20-year-old Anacortes man with one arrest warrant. The second man showed the effects of drinking alcohol, admitted to drinking and provided a portable breath test that confirmed it. He was cited and both males were booked into jail on the warrants. Another passenger, 16-year-old Anacortes girl, allegedly admitted drinking four beers and faces a juvenile court referral. She was taken home and released to her mother.
• A resident of the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue reported a 3 by 3-foot sliding window on his house had an outer pane broken. The man reported his cat used the window to go in and out of the house, but the cat did not damage the window.
• Officers were dispatched to an accident in the area of 17th Street and K Avenue after a pickup struck two parked cars and then drove into an embankment at a house on K Avenue just before midnight. A witness and the two vehicle owners contacted the male teenage driver of the pickup to see if he was injured, but he allegedly ran from the scene. The witnesses said the teen appeared intoxicated.
An officer contacted the pickup owner at home in the 1700 block of 39th Street, and he said his 18-year-old son had it earlier. The teen and his father later spoke with police and the teen denied driving the truck at the time of the accident. He said it must have been stolen, although neither he nor his father wanted to sign a stolen vehicle report. The investigation continues.
Sunday, Nov. 16
• Officers responded to a physical domestic at a home where they found an intoxicated 45-year-old woman in the front yard with scratches on her wrist and blood smears on her face and in her hair. She said nothing happened and claimed her dog scratched her. Officers spoke with the woman’s 37-year-old boyfriend in the house. He had fresh swelling and marks on his eye but was initially uncooperative. He said the woman was fighting with her female cousin and when he tried to intervene, his girlfriend punched him in the face. A valid court order prohibits the woman from having contact with the man. She was booked into jail on investigation of felony violation of a no-contact order.
• A 15-year-old boy was charged with auto theft after an Anacortes man reported the theft of his Ford Escort from a parking lot in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue around 1:45 a.m. He suspected his stepson was the thief. An officer contacted the teen who allegedly admitted taking the car without permission and returning it to the parking lot. The teen’s mother wanted to pursue criminal charges because he had taken the car previously without permission.
• Graffiti of a gang nature was reportedly painted on walls and equipment at Daniels Field in the 1900 block of 13th Street. Two parking barricades appeared to have been scorched from fire. Estimated cleaning and repair costs are $700.
• A resident of the 1200 block of 14th Street reported someone slashed a tire on his Toyota pickup parked on the side of his house.
• Police contacted a 47-year-old Anacortes man at a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue after employees reported he refused to leave. They said he was asked to go because was trying to pick fights. The man also refused officers’ requests for him to leave the bar, then reportedly began to scream and go limp when police tried to escort him out. The man reportedly flailed at officers, went to the ground and refused to stand. He was handcuffed and moved to a police car where police said he attempted to kick out the doors. He was booked into jail on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Monday, Nov. 17
• An Anacortes man reported his pickup was struck in the driver’s door by an unknown vehicle while it was parked either at the high school or a grocery store in the 900 block of 11th Street. The victim did not find the damage until the next day. Estimated damage is $500.
• An Anacortes woman reported the rear bumper of her car was dented while it was parked at a store in the 1500 block of Commercial Avenue.
• Officers responded to a physical domestic at a house where they contacted a 53-year-old man and his 49-year-old wife who had been arguing after returning home from a downtown bar. The woman claimed her husband struck her in the head in their bedroom. The man said his wife grabbed him by the throat outside the bar earlier. The man also claimed he and his wife pushed and shoved each other while arguing. The husband was deemed the primary aggressor at the house and the wife the primary aggressor at the bar. He was booked into jail on a charge of domestic assault and she was later cited on the same charge.
Tuesday, Nov. 18
• The owner of a four-plex in the 2000 block of H Avenue reported the theft of two custom-made private drive signs that marked the ends of the driveway. The loss was estimated at $80.
• The supervisor of a business in the 400 block of 30th Street reported about $272 in cash was missing from a petty cash envelope kept in a locked drawer in an office. The office is open to all company employees. The company is also investigating the matter internally.
• An Anacortes woman reported she was assaulted by her 34-year-old domestic partner at their residence. She claimed her partner threatened to kill her while she was on the phone talking to a friend. She said her partner took the phone away from her, which led to more arguing and the partner allegedly throwing food at the woman. She said her face was scratched as she struggled with her partner to get her phone back. The partner left the house prior to officer arrival and contact with her is pending.
Wednesday, Nov. 19
• A Hope Island woman reported the theft of a book of blank checks from a desk drawer in her office in the 700 block of Commercial Avenue. She later found several unauthorized checks were cashed in La Conner. The woman recognized the handwriting on the forged checks as possibly that of a family member who allegedly uses illegal drugs. The investigation continues.
• A resident of the 1400 block of 13th Street reported his 15-year-old stepson kicked open a locked bedroom door and damaged the door frame and bolt assembly. When contacted by an officer a few blocks away the boy allegedly admitted he damaged the door because he needed a girl’s number that was stored on a cell phone. The boy claimed it was “typical teenage behavior.” He will be referred for malicious mischief.
• A man living in the 1500 block of Burrows Court reported the theft of a $70 George Foreman grill from his carport.
Thursday, Nov. 20
• A woman reported the screen to her 16-year-old daughter’s bedroom was askew at their home in the 2200 block of G Avenue. She learned her daughter sneaked out of the house through the window a couple nights earlier, but closed the window. The girl checked and was missing an iPod and a CD. The girl named a boy as a possible suspect.
• A 24-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested on a charge of domestic malicious mischief after she allegedly punched out the window to the front door at her former boyfriend’s home. The man reported she dropped off their two children at his house and an argument ensued. He told officers he closed and locked the front door to keep the woman out, but she became angrier and punched out the window. The woman was found a short time later and booked into jail.
• A Lake Forest Park man reported his BMW’s rear window was shattered while parked in the 1300 block of 33rd Street. Nothing appeared to be missing. Estimated damage is $300.
• A woman reported her 15-year-old son ran away after assaulting her in a moving vehicle. She said they were driving to an appointment the boy did not want to attend and he kept trying to put the car’s gearshift into park while the vehicle was moving. She said she finally slapped her son’s face, which resulted in him slugging her in the arm several times. He then jumped out of the car and ran off. The boy was found in the 2000 block of N Avenue where he allegedly admitted hitting his mother. He faces a juvenile referral on a charge of assault.
