Officers are working to find out where a pair of Anacortes men got a huge banner for the movie “Angels and Demons” after an officer saw the two carrying it just after 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, near Sixth Street and Commercial Avenue.

When the men saw the officer, they dropped the banner and ran.

The officer caught one man, an 18-year-old Anacortes resident, who claimed his friend bought the 7 by 11-foot sign during Shipwreck Day. The man smelled of alcohol and provided a breath test that confirmed he had been drinking. He was arrested and faces a charge of underage drinking.

Police also spoke with the friend, a 23-year-old Anacortes man, who was found walking in the area. The friend initially said he did not know anything about the banner, then changed his story several times, saying he bought it at Shipwreck Day, at the Arts Festival and from the cinema.

Officers retained the banner and are working to determine its origin.

Among the other 218 cases handled by Anacortes police during the previous week:

Friday, Sept. 18

• Four vehicles parked at Whistle Lake were prowled during the early evening hours. Three of the vehicles had side windows smashed out to gain entry and the fourth vehicle may have been entered using a slim jim.

The victims were residents of Anacortes, Oak Harbor and Sedro-Woolley. Items stolen from the various vehicles included purses, wallets, checkbooks, credit cards, identification, a cell phone, an iPod and assorted clothing.

• An officer saw a 37-year-old Anacortes woman with an arrest warrant enter a motel room in the 2900 block of Commercial Avenue. The woman was arrested, issued a new court date on possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges and released. The jail would not accept her due to overcrowding.

• A 27-year-old Oak Harbor man suffered a broken nose after allegedly being head-butted and punched in the face by a 29-year-old Anacortes man inside a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue around 11:40 p.m. The victim reported he walked into the bar with two friends when a man accused him of spitting on another bar patron.

The victim said while he and his friends were talking to the first man, the 29-year-old approached from behind and made a racially derogatory comment. The victim said he told the suspect he didn’t know what he was talking about and his language wasn’t necessary, then the suspect head-butted him in the nose.

The suspect allegedly punched the victim twice more as he fell to the ground then fled on foot. As the friends helped the victim from the bar, another man reportedly punched one of the friends. Witnesses identified the suspect and officers looked for him without success. He faces assault charges.

• A 33-year-old Anacortes man was arrested in the 3000 block of D Avenue after an officer, who knew he had a felony warrant for violation of a court order, saw him driving a car. The man was booked into jail on the warrant and cited for not having a valid driver’s license.

Saturday, Sept. 19

• Police responded to another fight at the same bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue where one man reportedly had a bloody face and another man fled on foot around 12:49 a.m. An officer spotted a 23-year-old Anacortes man in the 1200 block of Fifth Street and chased him on foot for a few blocks until the man dove to the ground and gave up.

The man allegedly admitted he got into a fight with another man after the man razzed him about not skateboarding anymore. The man said he gained the upper hand in the fight and punched the other man in the face a few times.

The other man told police he was involved in a mutual fight with the first man but he did not want to pursue charges. Both men face disorderly conduct charges.

• A Toyota 4Runner owned by a couple from Seattle had its window smashed while it was parked at Whistle Lake. The couple returned from hiking and found they were missing a backpack with clothing and various prescription medications.  Estimated loss is $500.

• A pickup parked in the 1200 block of 20th Street had a derogatory word scratched into its paint. The victim believed her ex-husband was possibly responsible because he allegedly called her the same word in front of their children earlier.

The woman later reported another vehicle belonging to her was keyed across the entire length of the passenger side. An officer spoke with the ex-husband who denied any knowledge of the vandalism.

• A 21-year-old Kirkland man was cited for disorderly conduct after he allegedly yelled at a group of people seated in a car in the 1000 block of Fourth Street, spit on the car and punched a man who got out of the car in the head. The suspect was intoxicated and tried to walk away from police, but was handcuffed without incident. The suspect allegedly admitted spitting on the car and punching the other man.

The victim did not want to pursue assault charges due to the suspect being drunk. The suspect was cited and released.

Sunday, Sept. 20

• A 26-year-old Anacortes man was cited for false reporting after he called 911 and reported a fight outside a bar in the 300 block of Commercial Avenue around 12:40 a.m. An officer was on scene at the time and did not see anyone fighting, nor did the bar staff or anyone else in the area that officers spoke with. The man changed the details of his story and could not describe anyone involved in the alleged fight.

• An officer stopped a car driven by a 22-year-old Anacortes woman for speeding on Oakes Avenue around 5:35 a.m. The woman smelled strongly of intoxicants. She said she had one drink a few hours earlier. She failed field sobriety tests and was arrested on a charge of DUI. The officer found a half full bottle of wine in the woman’s car.

The woman reportedly provided breath samples nearly twice the legal limit, then admitted drinking an unknown amount of wine straight from the bottle as she drove from Seattle. She was cited and released to a sober friend.

• Officers responded to the 1200 block of 29th Street after a witness reported a young woman was in the street crying and yelling. Officers found the woman on the front porch of a house and recognized her as a 20-year-old Anacortes woman. She was unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech and appeared to be intoxicated.

The woman allegedly admitted drinking a beer but gave a portable breath test more than twice the legal driving limit. She was arrested on a charge of underage drinking and released at the scene.

• Officers contacted a 42-year-old woman at her home after her boyfriend reported she had been drinking and throwing things around the home and was possibly suicidal. The boyfriend said she was upset she could not get pain medication for a back problem.

The woman appeared to be intoxicated and told an officer she had been thinking about cutting her wrists. She had scars on her wrists from previous cuts.

The woman was not cooperative in going to the hospital for evaluation and screamed obscenities at the officers. She was finally talked into a police car and taken to the emergency room where she reportedly was belligerent with the staff and attempted to bite an officer. She was held on an involuntary mental evaluation.

• A 42-year-old Anacortes woman was arrested for having a felony warrant for failing to report to jail on a drug charge and two misdemeanor warrants. She was taken into custody at a home in the 2600 block of R Avenue and booked into the county jail.

Monday, Sept. 21

• A 15-year-old Anacortes boy was referred to juvenile court on a possession of marijuana charge after high school officials found a small bag of marijuana in his backpack. The boy skipped a class and left campus and was contacted by school officials when he returned.

Tuesday, Sept. 22

• A 59-year-old Anacortes woman was bitten in the hand by a dog while walking on the Tommy Thompson Trail around 10:55 a.m. The dog was on a leash being walked by its owner.

The dog owner said the animal had never bitten anyone before and it was current on vaccinations. The dog owner was required to quarantine the dog at home for 10 days and the incident is being followed up on by the animal control officer.

• A Lynnwood woman reported her station wagon was prowled while it was parked at Whistle Lake the previous weekend. The woman said the car was locked, but there was no sign of forced entry. Stolen were a backpack, women’s clothing, men’s clothing, Sonic tooth brushes and assorted electric grooming devices. Estimated loss is $3,000.

• A 16-year-old boy was arrested at his home after he argued and struggled with his father about the boy refusing to go to family counseling. The father tried to get the boy to leave the house, but the boy resisted.

The boy allegedly broke a shoe rack near the front door into pieces and knocked a white board off a wall. He was arrested on a charge of domestic malicious mischief and booked into juvenile detention.

• An officer stopped a pickup after seeing a passenger not wearing a seat belt and hanging out the window and the vehicle not signaling or making complete stops at stop signs. The vehicle also had traveled very fast down a gravel driveway.

The driver, a 32-year-old Anacortes man, smelled strongly of alcohol and had slurred speech. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. A half full bottle of vodka was found in the pickup.

The passenger, a 25-year-old Anacortes man, was verbally belligerent. He reportedly got out of the pickup and vomited, rolled around on some nearby grass, and then attempted to swim across the pavement.

He appeared to be under the influence of drugs so paramedics transported him to the emergency room. The driver provided breath samples almost twice the legal limit and allegedly admitted drinking from the vodka bottle. He was issued a DUI citation and released to a sober relative.

• A 31-year-old Anacortes man was arrested on a charge of domestic assault after he allegedly punched a former roommate repeatedly at a home on 20th Street. The victim, a 22-year-old Anacortes man, reportedly made a rude comment about the suspect’s girlfriend and a pushing match ensued.

The suspect said the younger man took a swing at him and missed, so he punched him in the nose. The victim then allegedly got the older man in a head lock, but the suspect did not stop fighting until the victim’s girlfriend hit the suspect with a weight from a weight set.
