In its annual awards ceremony last week, the Anacortes Schools Foundation presented more than $65,300 in educational scholarships. Graduating high school seniors received scholarship awards from a variety of funds managed by the foundation.
Foundation President Jeff Waldron welcomed students and their families, teachers and school administrators, and representatives from many donor families who have contributed to the endowment funds over the years. The evening began with a performance by the Anacortes High School girls treble choir, directed by Carole Leander.
Don Sorensen, Tesoro refinery manager, and John McDarment, Tesoro human resources manager, presented several scholarships sponsored by the refinery. Port of Anacortes Director Bob Hyde presented an award to a student pursuing education in the marine industry.
Keith Anderson, a counselor at Anacortes High School for 24 years, presented many of the awards. Anderson thanked the foundation for the many years of financial contributions it has made which have helped to further the education for hundreds of Anacortes students.
This year’s Anacortes Schools Foundation recipients were Spencer Wilhelm, Amanda Kelly, Thomas Stoneham, Kirsten Woodsmith, Mallory Bogardus, Kalia Hammond, Alex Lytton, Rachel Huff, Ross Peickert, Rachel Cox, Austin Portis, Morgan Jones, Antonia Heffelfinger, Robby Hammond, Keith Celebrezze, Juan Verdin, Derek Hsu, Alexander Thomson, Leslie Baca, TJ Gross, Christine Mussen, Stefan Verbano, Spencer Andrich, Clara Hill, Amanda Krebs and Sarah Idczak.
The Anacortes Schools Foundation is a nonprofit volunteer organization that fosters opportunities for students of Anacortes schools. It manages an endowment fund of $1.2 million with a variety of scholarship funds tailored to individual and family requirements.
