Anacortes Schools preparing for tight budget year

The Anacortes School District faces a number of cuts and fee increases due to the rising costs of food, fuel and employee wages when it finalizes its budget this month.

The School Board heard a presentation on the financial situation at a board meeting Thursday.

Part of the cuts are due to a lower-than-expected kindergarten enrollment, said Lisa Matthews, business and finance director for the district.

As a result Island View Elementary School will have only one kindergarten class. The entire district will have eight kindergarten classes, Matthews said.

The state pays districts roughly $5,100 per child for their education. Overall the district is down about 65 students from its average.

The School Board is scheduled to approve the budget, about $28 million, during its 6:15 p.m. meeting on Aug. 21.
