A new venue for art exhibits and small events, Anchor Art Space, opened this month at 216 Commercial Ave.
“It’s an exhibition space for a broad variety of arts,” said owner Jean Behnke, a sculptor and printmaker who comes from Lopez Island.
The gallery opened with a celebration Dec. 5.
“It was pretty well-attended,” Behnke said.
Anchor Art Space is currently showing the work of Northwest Artists, among others. It has a retail section featuring handmade objects by local artists.
“The venue is designed to exhibit art that you would not see at other galleries,” she said.
Among Behnke’s plans are to add a darkened area for film viewing. The space will also be available for events or classes.
“I’ve curated shows and I’ve been an artist for many years. I’ve had a lot of teaching experience,” Behnke said.
She said the venue will allow her to support other artists and to show her own work.
“I look forward to talking to anyone about having events there,” she said.
She said it was a bit of a leap of faith to open during the current economic downturn.
“I have hope and optimism. It can be infectious,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of response from artists. I’m really excited about opening.”
