Follow the smoke and the scent of alder-smoked salmon to the Anacortes Eagles’ 53rd annual salmon barbecue, which will be fired up 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17 in front of the Eagles Hall, 907 Seventh St.

The event is a bona fide Anacortes tradition. The Eagles will cook almost a ton of salmon, about 1,000 chickens and 1,500 pounds of country-style pork ribs over open alder fires during the three-day event. Tables are set up in the street outside, but inside seating is available if it rains.

Plates include a choice of salmon, chicken or pork ribs — or a combo plate with all three — and cole slaw, Eagle baked beans (a secret recipe), garlic bread and a beverage. Visitors can also take home barbecued salmon by the pound.

Then, to top it all off, the members of the Eagles Auxiliary will sell homemade pie.

The roots of the barbecue go back to a group of Eagles who started a fishing derby that soon became a salmon derby and outdoor barbecue, according to old newspaper reports. It has grown into the current three-day event the third weekend in August.

Eagles Aerie and Auxiliary 249 is a nonprofit organization. Proceeds of the barbecue pay for scholarships and donations to community organizations and help the club maintain its historic hall.

The club supports charities including the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, D.A.R.E., the Red Cross Caring for Kids program, the Anacortes Senior Center and the Anacortes 100 Food Bank.
