A man suspected of shooting his two dogs in Anacortes this past March, killing one and injuring the other, has been arrested in Pierce County.

Army Specialist Travis Carl McDermitt of the 5th Stryker Brigade was stopped during a random inspection while entering Fort Lewis about 10 a.m.
Thursday.

A driver’s license check indicated he was wanted on a warrant, so he was arrested and transported to the Pierce County jail. McDermitt, 26, was to be transferred to Skagit County, according to Joseph Piek, a Fort Lewis public affairs representative, according to an e-mail sent to The News Tribune in Tacoma.

Skagit County Superior Court issued a felony bench warrant for McDermitt’s arrest on two counts of first-degree animal cruelty, as well as discharging a firearm in a public place.

According to court documents, police found a dead male boxer dog with a bullet wound to the head March 29. A day later, a wounded female boxer was also found at Heart Lake Park in Anacortes.

Witness statements from court documents indicate that McDermitt had stayed in a motel in Anacortes with two boxers around that time, and the two dogs had damaged the room.
