In what’s become a tradition, however shortlived, the activities of Anacortes student-athletes who appeared on the American’s sports pages are brought up to date. Or, in some cases, their plans are presented here to satisfy your interest in the welfare of these young adults as they embark on the sea of life.
• Erica Addison, fastpitch, ’06: Completed her second year at Bellevue Community College in brilliant fashion. She led her division-winning team (42-6) with 61 RBIs, 12 home runs and a .468 batting average. Erica was named to the NWAACC All-America team and was chosen MVP and first teamer of the northern division of the NWAACC. She’s currently weighing offers from several four-year universities.
• Josh Freeman, all-around athlete, ’07: After com pleting a year at the Air Force Academy prep school, Josh will move up to the four-year curriculum and begin his varsity football career for the Falcons in the fall. Before that he has six weeks of Air Force basic training to complete.
• Leslie Baca, tennis and swimming, ’08: After being courted by Princeton and Duke, Leslie chose the warmer climate in North Carolina. She plans to swim for fitness and play club tennis, in addition to being a member of DUMB, the Duke University Marching Band. Her academic interest lies in international comparative studies, with an area specialty of Turkey.
• Rebecca Sturdy, swimming, ’03: The Texas A&M All-America swimmer has graduated from Aggieland and assumed a swimming-related job: publicist for the Olympic swim team.
• Kaila Hammond, track, basketball, ’08: School record holder in the shot put and discus, Kaila will attend Northwest University. The Kirkland NAIA school has an enrollment of 1,200 and competes in the Cascade Conference. Kaila has been recruited to the track team, but hopes to walk onto the basketball team also.
• Dana Dutton, swimming, ’07: Attends Wellesley College where she swam for the the Wellesley Blue Pride and played water polo as an off-season activity. Dana swam the backstroke and individual medly for the DIII Eastern College Athletic Conference member. She is pursuing Wellesley’s excellent International Relations major.
• Katie Sentinella, fastpitch, ’07: Played on the Skagit Valley College team this spring. Her .400-plus hitting and play in the outfield, at second and as catcher earned a second team all-conference honor as a utility player.
• Marissa Bower, volleyball, basketball, ’06: Finished two successful years at Bellevue Community College playing both basketball and volleyball. This season she led the Bulldogs to the season-ending NWAACC tournaments in both sports, setting the pace in scoring and rebounding as they finished 16-10 in basketball.
She was a bigtime blocker and killer for the 13-6 volleyball squad. Marissa will take a year away from sports to launch an online health care products business.
• Stephen Hudak, football, track, ’08: Grinnell College came to Stephen’s attention as he shopped for a school which satisfied his academic interests. The Iowa college is noted for offering its 1,500 students a sound grounding in arts and letters. Stephen looks forward to participating in football at the DIII school.
• Ali Jordan, fastpitch, ’06: Was named to the first team of the northern division of the NWAACC for the second consecutive year. The one-armed right handed pitcher led the Dolphins of Shoreline Community College to a 24-23 record.
• Alyssa Morrison, tennis, ’06: Moved up to number two singles on Willamette University’s women’s team, while playing third doubles in her sophomore year at the Salem, Ore., school.
She’ll enter her junior year on track for a degree in rhetoric and media studies and a shot at the number one singles position for the Bearcats.
• Jordan Freeman, all-around athlete, ’08: Jordan will enroll at Skagit Valley College in the fall and walk on to the basketball team. Jordan plans to take online aviation courses from Utah Valley State College to pad his résumé for a career as a pilot.
• Jessica Lindquist, fastpitch, ’07: Pitched for Skagit Valley College in ’08, winning 10 games overall, including a no-hitter and two one-hitters. The team improved its record from two wins to 22 and is looking forward to another successful year under the guidance of newly appointed coach Danielle Baird, a Sedro-Woolley alumna.
• Kyle Dixon, football, baseball, ’08: The two-year starting quarterback will play football for Dakota State University, located in Madison, S.D. The NAIA school has about 2,300 students and plays in the Dakota Athletic Conference. Kyle looks forward to a military career.
• Stephanie Wenke, girls basketball, ’05: Stephanie finished her junior year at Hope International University in Fullerton, Calif. The team continued showing improvement from the previous year’s record of 12-17, finishing with a 19-17 record. Stephanie averaged 8.7 points per game with a .424 field goal percentage.
• Kassandra Beseau, swimming, ’08: Will attend the University of Evansville in Indiana. She will walk on, hoping to qualify for a scholarship with the DI member of the Missouri Valley Conference. Kassandra’s academic interest lies in the medical field.
• Rien Long, all-around athlete, ’98: After three years on the defensive line for the Tennessee Titans, Rien failed to return to form following a serious hamstring rupture and was consequently cut by the NFL team. Shortly thereafter, Rien’s long path to recuperation was lengthened when he crashed his car into a concrete abutment one icy night in Nashville. The accident would have proved fatal to anyone but an enormously strong athlete in top physical condition. Nevertheless, Rien’s had to endure many surgical procedures and is still in the recovery mode.
• Ryan Buenaflor, football, ’04: When the Eastern Washington University Eagles open their 2008 schedule at Texas Tech, Bueno will likely be listed as the backup middle linebacker. As a red shirt junior, he is on schedule to graduate.
• Elle McDonald, swimming, ’08: Will attend Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she intends to major in business with a concentration on business and tourism.
• Scott Olausen, swimming, soccer, ’08: Skagit Valley College beckons Scott. His interest lies in their Parks Law Enforcement Academy where he aspires to be a park ranger assistant or become involved in outdoor recreation. Joining an Ultimate Frisbee league or playing recreational soccer at SVC are on his wish list.
• Andrew Lefave, football, baseball, ’02: After Andrew signed with Milwaukee and led the South Atlantic League with a .345 batting average, with 17 home runs and 79 RBIs in 112 games, the Brewers, desperate for pitching, traded the Anacortes native to the Washington Nationals for reliever Ray King.
Currently playing for Harrisburg in the AA Eastern League, Andrew’s sharpening his hitting eye as his steadily climbing average has risen to .266 with a .731 on-base plus slugging percentage over 50 games.
• Justin Holden, swimming, golf, ’08: Will attend William & Mary college in Williamsburg, Va., where he will begin work on what he hopes will eventuate in an M.D/Ph.D in biomedical engineering. Justin’s interests range from jazz band to Eagle Scout activities, but they’ll have to share time with his commitment to serve as a lifeguard at Fidalgo Pool until he journeys to Williamsburg.
• T.J. Gross, swimming, ’08: Will follow in the footsteps of his brothers, Jason, ’07, and Stanley, ’04, to Washington State University. Valedictorian T.J. plans to major in bioengineering with an emphasis on pre-medicine. His interests range from Spanish to Shakespeare and competing in Knowledge Bowl and mathematics competitions.
• Keeler Brynteson, baseball, ’07: The Portland Pilots chose to redshirt this canny lefty before running him to the bump for a taste of DI action. He’ll get to show his stuff to the Beavers and Ducks next season.
• Alex Lytton, golf, ’08: With four years of high school golf experience behind him, Alex should be ready to hit the links with the best of execs after he’s picked up his degree in chemical or environmental engineering at the University of Washington.
• Brittany Janz, all-around athlete, ’08: Anacortes’ most versatile girl athlete will cast her lot with Skagit Valley College on the basketball court next winter. “I’ll be playing ball and I’ll be having fun,” she said.
