QUINCY, Mass — Mount Vernon wanted to turn things around in its second game of pool play Monday at the Babe Ruth League World Series.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned as the team suffered its second defeat, falling to Youngstown (Ohio) 4-1 in the tournament for 14-year-olds.
Mount Vernon isn’t out of the tournament title picture just yet. The Bulldogs set their sights on Cambridge (Mass.) on Tuesday, then wrap up pool play against New England Regional champion Norwalk (Conn.) on Wednesday.
Like Mount Vernon, neither of those teams has won a game at the tournament.
As far as the loss against Youngstown was concerned, Mount Vernon coach Adam McAbee was rather upbeat.
“Honestly, we played very well defensively,” the coach said. “We made some great plays in the field.”
It was at the plate where Mount Vernon struggled.
“We hit some hard shots,” McAbee admitted, “but we hit the ball right at people.”
Youngstown jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mount Vernon pitcher Sean FitzGerald settled down after the rough start and held the opposition scoreless until he departed in the fifth inning.
Brennan Emory replaced FitzGerald and faced a pair of batters before giving way to closer Adolph Rivas. Youngstown plated another pair of runs in the sixth. For the game, it had six hits and committed a pair of errors.
Mount Vernon plated its only run in the seventh. For the game, the Bulldogs had three hits and did not commit an error.
Two of Mount Vernon’s three hits came off the bat of Marchael Acode. Acode went 2-for-3 with a double and a single.
“We still have two games left,” McAbee said. “If we can win both of those, then we’ll make into the next round.”
