Mount Vernon’s Brennan Emory pitches Wednesday against Ellensburg. Mount Vernon won 11-0.

MOUNT VERNON — Brennan Emory and the Mount Vernon 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team made sure their start in the state tournament was a good one.

Emory threw a one-hitter and the Bulldogs played flawless defense to topple Ellensburg 11-0 in the first round of pool play.

He was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Mount Vernon (31-8) will play North Kitsap at 8 p.m. at Sherman Anderson Field today in the next pool-play game.

Emory threw a gem for Mount Vernon, striking out six batters and walking one on his way to the victory.

“He hit his spots,” Mount Vernon coach Adam McAbee said. “Every pitch we asked of him, he got it in there.”

Brennan had a no-hitter until Ellensburg’s Nate Sorensen hit a flare for a single with one out in the fifth.

Mount Vernon was opportunistic on offense, taking advantage of sharp base running and seven Ellensburg errors in the victory.

Lead-off hitter Spencer McBride was 2-for-4 with a pair of run-scoring singles for the Bulldogs, No. 2 batter Richard Dutton reached base four times (including a bases-loaded walk) and catcher Vince Mata had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.

Shane Servoss added two singles and a run-scoring sacrifice fly for Mount Vernon, which collected nine hits in the victory.

Another important number was zero — the number of Bulldogs errors.

“We take pride in playing defense,” McAbee said.

The 11-team tournament is scheduled to hold pool play through Saturday, then a single-elimination championship round Sunday.

The winner will earn a regional berth.
