Fred B. Fulton, state legislator and a former supervisor at the Anacortes Fisheries cannery, received an unusual letter from a local boy serving with the infantry in France. The letter was written on the labels from two cans of salmon packed at Anacortes Fisheries. “Dr. Mr. Fulton: Just a few lines to tell you how surprised I was to find these cans of good old Puget Sound fish way over here in France. It was just like meeting an old friend to run across one of these cans,” read the letter from Nate Lewis, a Guemes Island resident. Upholding the honor of their waterbound community, five youthful Anacortesans report after a cruise to Kodiak, Alaska, aboard the U.S.S. They (Doug Richards, Phil Robbins Jr., George Hicks, John Plancich Jr. and Gary Bryant) were the five.

Not so fortunate was Gib Moore, aboard Les Senff’s Deception. Gib, the only crewman traveling with seasick pills on the trip north, did a stint over the rails in Queen Charlotte Sound .
