In response to the call published by the Republican precinct committeemen a meeting was held at the city hall on Monday evening and the Taft Republican Club of Anacortes was organized, the roll being signed by thirty-five Republicans who were present.

It is rather grim humor for a pony that is on the program to be raffled to commit suicide just after all the raffle tickets have been sold, leaving little prospect for the winner at her drawing but to pay the pony’s funeral expenses. But this is what the pony did that was donated by the Island Transfer company to the Red Cross and for which $213.50 worth of tickets were sold by the Odd Fellows. That doesn’t tell the whole story, however, for Hugh Mondhan, of the Island Transfer company, immediately after the death of the first pony, donated a second pony — a better one than the first.

The West Mingo is in port this week at the A. L. & B. wharf, loading 1,245,000 feet of lumber for the Atlantic coast. The Point Judith lifted 120,000 sets of oil cases for Mexico this week, docking at Morrison’s warehouse. The Admiral Fisk is in port today lifting a cargo of 50,000 oil cases at Morrison and the A. L. & B.

A trust fund agreement, preparatory to collecting funds for a swimming pool here, is expected to be completed this week, Attorney Ben Driftmier Jr. said today. The agreement will establish a trust fund for donations and guarantee that money collected will go for no other purpose than for which it was given, he explained.

Editorial: There are people in Anacortes who would stop future assessments against real property in Anacortes. This could mean the slowdown or stop of much progress, perhaps it already has. The privilege of owning real estate carries with it the responsibility of paying a fair share as determined by the amount and location of the property. If you can’t afford all your holdings — better try to sell some because Anacortes is going to move ahead with or without you. There is no reason to cause one generation of failure to become another one.

If the Anacortes Railway Committee of the Project of the 90s has its current plan approved by the City Council, the popular narrow-gauge trail will soon be rolling down Ninth Street to Commercial Avenue. The 90s group, established to help revitalize the downtown area, is teaming up with railway founder Tommy Thompson to connect local attractions like the Depot and the W.T. Preston, City parks, the thriving marinas and the downtown business district.

While city council members await review of the nearly final Fidalgo Bay draft plan, two principals involved with commercial development issues in the area were highly critical of the City Hall efforts. Dan Dingfield, project manager for MJB Associates, was scathing in his criticisms of the council and city planners, especially regarding the ban on retail south of 22nd Street.
