Mrs. E. S. Dodge, Anacortes vice president of the Skagit County Women’s Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition Association, has called a public meeting of the women of Anacortes and vicinity.

July 25, 1918
Romayne Nelson Palmer, the 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Palmer, 2218 10th Ave., died unexpectedly early Monday morning of what is thought to be lockjaw. Friday he fell off the house and broke his arm, and this was getting along so well that he walked down to Dr. H.E. Frost’s office to have the arm dressed. Monday morning at 15 minutes to 5 o’clock he was sitting up in bed talking with his father when the attack came, and he was dead before Dr. Frost could arrive. A post-mortem examination showed the presence of germs believed to be tetanus bacilli.

July 26, 1928
The Rotary club at its noon luncheon Wednesday decided to sponsor a minstrel show, the proceeds of which are to assist in the purchase of instruments for the high school band which is to be organized this fall, and to which more than a hundred students have pledged to become members.

July 29, 1948
Photo captions: Lavish and colorful was the gigantic civic parade of last Saturday morning at the height of the annual Marineers’ Pageant. Pictured at top is the float of the Anacortes Veneer company of the city, a dream that brought gasps from the huge crowd. In the lower picture is the lovely Queen’s Float. Queen Sally Amerman and the seven princesses of the court are pictured. Representatives of Life Magazine in town for various Pageant shots spent an hour Sunday morning at Causland Park taking pictures of the Queen and her court in their formal attire on the beautiful Queen’s Float.

July 31, 1958
Great Northern crews are busy this week rerouting their tracks along Second Street to give clearance to a new Port of Anacortes warehouse which will be constructed soon at First and Commercial. Cost of relocation is set at $12,000. The tracks will follow Second from the vicinity of M to Q Avenue.

July 25, 1968
The Anacortes Museum of History and Art will open to the public Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4. The initial display will be a heritage show. Everyone is invited to attend the opening and view the restoration of the Carnegie Library into a museum.

July 26, 1978
A cross-section of the Anacortes civic and business community believes the time has come to attract lots of people to the city — visiting tourists and convention delegates, that is. For this reason, the new Anacortes Convention and Visitors Bureau last week initiated plans in which bureau members will see a 20 percent increase in the Anacortes tourist industry by the end of 1979.

July 27, 1988
After some apparent misgivings and a short public hearing July 22, the Port of Anacortes declared its property from Fourth to Sixth streets and S and T avenues surplus. The action cleared the way for the port to sell the property to the City of Anacortes for $620,500 as a future site for Anacortes’ secondary sewage plant. Along with the money, the port will acquire the City’s primary sewage site at Third and R Avenue.
