March 11, 1909
An ordinance was passed extending Commercial avenue across the tide flats on Fidalgo bay. Judge Norvell reported that in pursuance of the resolution of the city council declaring it to be the intention of the city where any streets of the city strikes tide water to extend those streets over the land and across the harbor area, that the ordinances for this purpose were in the process of making and that up to date the only he had finished was the one extending Commercial avenue.
March 13, 1919
The arrival of the 63rd Artillery in Everett and Seattle with several Anacortes boys among the home comers was the occasion for a number of friends and relatives to go from here to both Everett and Seattle to welcome them. Among those who came with the 63rd are Fred Ellison, Lester Sherby, Wm. Beil, Carl Strock, Ed Bullock and Elbert Nicholson. They will be at Camp Lewis a short time. W. Reece Mink was to have been among them, but because of an unusual incident in New York he was detained there. However, he is expected to arrive in Anacortes before any of the rest.

Work is rapidly progressing on the new pulp mill at the E.K. Wood Lumber company’s plant at Burrows Bay, and it is expected that it will be ready for operation in about 30 days.
March 10, 1949
Anacortes’ application for federal aid to construct low cost housing is now pending, following the expiration of a one-month moratorium ordered earlier on such applications, it was reported at the regular meeting of the Anacortes housing Authority held Tuesday noon. The application is for $60,000 for preliminary planning and $1-1/2 million for construction of a 150-unit apartment complex.This would include 100 units for elderly persons and 50 for low-income families.

Improved lighting at the intersection of the new highway and Commercial Ave. was being provided today by an electrical crew from the State Highway Department. Two 20,000 lumen mercury vapor lights were being installed today at 36th and Commercial Avenue.

Proposals for developing the eight-acre playing ground at 32nd Street were outlined for members of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce this week. City manager Earl Diller displayed plans for placement of recreational facilities in the newly acquired park purchased with state and federal funds and a $16,000 contribution by the Chamber of Commerce, he said.

The first indication of new retail development near the site of the forthcoming Safeway “Super-Store” in downtown Anacortes was made known this week. Port of Anacortes Manager Bob Keller confirmed this past week that a fast-food restaurant chain is negotiating for lease of port-owned property at 13th and Commercial. Keller declined to name the restaurant chain, saying that negotiations were still in progress.

Plans to develop the White Gull-Majestic Inn have been abandoned again, amidst charges and counter charges and the threat of lawsuits. Jeffrey Wetmore, who joined Vernon and Lena Humber to purchase the building late last year, announced last week that the partners were canceling the sale agreement with Interwest Bank. The latest action was taken when it became clear to the partners that renovation to bring the building up to state fire code would cost in excess of $100,000 and take months, Wetmore said.
