Anacortes high school will this year graduate the largest class in the history of that institution and there will be few if any senior classes of similar numbers with as high or higher average standing in scholarship and deportment.

City Engineer Wm. B. Short reported the cost of paving 7th, 8th and 9th streets and O and K avenues at the special meeting of the city council Friday night at $72,500 for one course of concrete. Estimates for various kinds of paving were from that amount up to $86,166.

When the Oak Harbor high school students “sneaked” off from school last Friday and came to Anacortes to have their annual sneak day picnic, they were nearly disappointed. For it rained that day and it was thought that they were going to have to go back to school and consider their “sneak” day had been a flop. But an appeal to W.R. Zinn to put on a special matinee at the Paramount theatre was not met with deaf ears, and after getting the theatre crew together, a show was given.

Three ferries of the Black Ball Line were necessary to carry the W.C. “Spike” Huggins shows thru Anacortes on Monday, May 22, en route to Victoria, British Columbia, where the midway show will be one of the features presented during the visit of the King and Queen of England to that city the latter part of this month.

Guemes Island, Anacortes suburb across the Guemes Channel will put on their best clothes and stage the biggest time ever held on the island on next Friday evening,
May 27th when the electric lights and power for the island are turned on. Following a big banquet to be held during the evening in the Community Center building on the island, a switch will be pulled turning on electric lights for the first time in the history of the island.
Anacortes basketball fans will welcome one of the big names in college basketball play in collegiate circles on the Pacific Coast here as the new basketball coach at Anacortes high school this fall with the announcement during the past several days of the signing of William (Bill) Taylor, twice All-Northern division guard and once All-Pacific Coast guard on University of Washington basketball teams.

This little viewed lake in the center of Anacortes, in a woodland setting, soon will be readily accessible to Fidalgo Islanders. Various city groups and volunteer workers, under the sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce, have nearly completed work on a road leading into Little Cranberry Lake. Anacortesans will be able to drive into the recreation area within 10 days, according to Chamber predictions.

The Anacortes Lions Club will be out in force with Anacortes Fireworks Booster Buttons. This week the local service club has arranged for a “traditional Independence Day” fireworks show July 4 at Skyline. The display, which will cost about $1,000 will be visible from all roadways throughout the Harry Davidson Skyline Development.

Anacortes resident Marija Franulovich this week will be honored as one of Washington’s “living treasures.” Franulovich, 70, will be honored Friday in Seattle for her role in keeping alive Croatian traditions, her daughter, Maria Petrish, said.
