Last Saturday, September 25, in the presence of a large number of citizens and visitors, the Grand Lodge of the Masonic Order of Washington laid the corner stone of the Carnegie Public Library of this city. The impressive ceremonies of the order were ably conducted by Judge J. Neterer of Bellingham, and after invocation and prayer by the Rev. Kerry of this city, lists of contributors to the library fund, names of the board, etc. was placed in the niche at the base of the stone and the huge monolith was hoisted by a derrick and put into place.

The local blackberry market in the upper section of the county has been one of the ups and downs during the past week, the price paid pickers going as high as 8 cents a pound for a day or two, then dropping to 7 cents by the middle of the week. On Monday, the representatives of a number of berry buying firms were in that section looking over the situation.

Officer Woods arrested a young man for speeding Monday evening, but when he explained that he was on his way to his own wedding, Woods allowed him to go, as he said he probably would have enough trouble.

Moving with machine like precision, a veteran Anacortes Sea Hawk football team rolled to a 31-0 victory over the Arlington Eagles, here Saturday afternoon in the opening home football game of the 1939 season.

L.N. Kolste, superintendent of Anacortes schools in conjunction with Dr. William Douglass state on Wednesday that unconfirmed reports going around Anacortes that there are several cases of polio here are entirely unfounded. The superintendent of schools stated that two girls of the city were in Bellingham are under observation. At this time the city health officer stated there was no indication that either girl has the disease.

First salvos are being fired in what could be another Skagit County gas war, Alton Funk, dealers’ association president said today. Some stations in Mount Vernon have been dropping prices for a week, with prices down as much as three cents from a regular 35.9-per-gallon standard.

The real estate offices for a proposed Cypress Island development will be located in a new condominium structure above the Anacortes state ferry landing.
According to Spokane businessman Raymond Hanson, the sales office for future “cluster development” units on his extensive Cypress Island land holdings will be situated in condominiums slated for construction by Bill and Vivian Kempthorn of Anacortes. The Kempthorns obtained a contract rezone recently on property they own between the road to the ferry landing and Sunset Avenue.
