Round up the pooches! The fourth annual Bark in the Park Dog Festival is right around the corner.

The fun starts at 10 a.m. and runs to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at Storvik Park.

The event includes a dog parade, dog demos, dog games, food and vendor booths. Contests will include best costume, tail wag, bark or howl, dog trick, look-a-like and peanut butter eating.

Other fun stuff will be “In the Dog House” photos, bark and poop raffles, hot dog bobbing, an adoptable dog parade and T-shirts and tote bags for sale.

Entrance donation for dogs is $7 each. Entry fee for contests is $5 per dog. The first 100 dogs receive goodie bags and bandanas.

A new event this year is a dancing dogs demo by Emerald City K-9 Freestyle Dancers.

“This is choreographed steps with handler and dog to music and many times include costumes of some sort,” said event coordinator Amy Terhune. “Each lasts a couple minutes and includes cues for the dog to do certain tricks or dance steps at the handler’s instruction.”

Emerald City will offer time in its booth during the rest of the festival for anyone wanting to try a couple of the dance steps.

A separate ring will also be set up for rally obedience, Terhune said. Marie Padovan of Catch the Wave Dog Training and members of the Bell Vernon Kennel Club will perform demos and run attendees through the rally obedience ring and the agility ring for donations.

All donations for the event benefit the Anacortes Dog Park under construction at the Ace of Hearts Creek Rotary Park at 38th Street and H Avenue.

Terhune put the annual festival together to raise funds specifically to create a permanent 1.5-acre off-leash dog area at the park, which will include a baseball field and play area. It would replace the temporary off-leash dog area at Ninth Street and R Avenue.

Fidalgo Islanders for Dogs Off-leash, which hosts the festival, has been working with the city and the island’s Rotary clubs in developing the park in stages as funding and volunteer or city labor becomes available.

Anacortes Parks Director Gary Robinson said the department is just waiting for the ground to dry out to send in volunteers to finish the grade work. Next will be the building of the fence around the dog area and gravel parking lot. Work will then start on the plantings around the park and the ball field.

This year, FIDO will have an bigger tent at the festival for information on the brick donation fund and the fence panel donation fund, along with samples of signs people can have hung permanently on a section of fence for a $200 donation.

“We’re really hoping we will be getting our fence up by this fall at the latest, so there’s a little bigger push at the moment to raise the funds we will need to do that,” Terhune said.
