Skagit County’s potato crop will be smaller this year because farmers were unable to plant some fields after an exceptionally wet spring.

Still, potato growers can salvage most of their yield as long as the heavy rains of winter don’t arrive early.

Harvest began just after Labor Day, which is about a month late, according to Don McMoran, agriculture educator for Washington State University’s Skagit County Extension. So far, only 10 percent of the county’s potatoes have been harvested.

Potatoes are a significant part of the county’s agricultural bottom line. In 2007, the crop was worth $65 million — 24 percent of the county’s $273 million farming industry.
