Event brings classic cars, family activities

Car owners from across western Washington will flock to Sedro-Woolley this weekend for an opportunity to show off their flashy rides and souped-up muscle cars.

The congregation of unique cars, trucks and motorcycles is part of the city’s Blast from the Past event that will feature its annual classic car show Saturday.

The show brings a wide variety of vehicles to Sedro-Woolley, said Tim McCray, owner of Northwest Tinman Auto Paint & Body. McCray is co-organizing the car show along with Rick Lemley, co-owner of Lemley Chapel.

“There’s something of interest for everybody,” McCray said.

The show is open to all types of cars. About 100 cars attended the show last year and there was a nice variety of makes and models, Lemley said.

The vehicle doesn’t have to be a classic or restored car, he said, it can even be a work in progress.

McCray said he plans to bring his 1996 Lincoln that received a custom paint job to the car show.

Although many people come to the event to see the classic cars, it’s not the only highlight of the annual summer event. There’s something for everyone, said David Bricka, Sedro-Woolley Chamber of Commerce executive director.

An arts and crafts show featuring a variety of vendors will be on display both Friday and Saturday. The Smith Brothers will help set the tone for the event as they perform a set of oldies tunes Saturday afternoon, Bricka said.

A series of contests including pizza eating, jump rope, hula hoop and pie eating will also create a spectacle Saturday afternoon. Disc jockey Kris Drake of the Oldies KBRC 1430 Morning Show will broadcast live at Hammer Heritage Square and will emcee all four contests.

Awards for the classic car show will be distributed to participants at 3:50 p.m.

There are more than 30 different categories for the vehicles to be judged on, McCray said. In lieu of a trophy, winners will receive a limited edition coffee mug designed by McCray.

People come to the event for a variety of reasons, Bricka said.

“There are lots of opportunities for families,” he said. “It’s great just to see friends and neighbors and get people out and see how great the community is.”
